The switch? Or the lock cylinder? If you have the old one out, turn the new lock cylinder to the on position ,line up the grooves on the cylinder with the grooves in the column and it should slide right in and click in. The switch just holds in with 2 Torx screws.you align the post sticking out of the bottom of the switch with the indentation in the steering column, tighten the screws and attach the plug to the switch.

Lost key need to replace Ignition switch for 1998 Mitsubishi Montero sport

Disconnect the battery: Before beginning any work on the electrical system of your vehicle, disconnect the battery to prevent accidental shocks or short circuits.
Remove the steering column cover: The ignition switch is located on the steering column, so you'll need to remove the cover to access it. Depending on the exact model and trim level of your Montero Sport, the cover may be held in place with screws or clips.
Remove the ignition switch: Once you have access to the ignition switch, you'll need to remove it from the steering column. This may involve removing any retaining screws or clips that are holding it in place, as well as disconnecting any electrical connectors.
Install the new ignition switch: Install the new ignition switch in the reverse order of the previous steps, making sure that it is securely fastened to the steering column and that all electrical connections are properly connected.
Test the new ignition switch: Once the new ignition switch is installed, reconnect the battery and test the switch to make sure that it is working properly. Insert the new key and try to start the engine. If the engine starts and the key can be turned smoothly, you've successfully replaced the ignition switch.
It's worth noting that depending on the specific make and model of your Montero Sport, the exact steps for replacing the ignition switch may vary slightly

Hello, When you installed the Key core, you probably turned the core 180 degrees off. There is also the spring release at the bottom of the Ignition switch. You may not have fully seated the core into the Ignition switch.

The part on the bottom was connected to the Ignition switch through the column. You may have to pull the Ignition switch again or at least remove the plastic steering column cover to align the bottom switch with the top where it connects to the Ignition key.

The lower switch you replaced is part of the Interlock system. It makes sure the trans gear is correct(in Park or Neutral) and that the brake pedal is pushed. If this is a stick-shift then there can be a switch on the clutch pedal. But that switch would not physically keep the key from turning.

Depending on the connection for the Ignition switch, you need to see if the attachment for the rod or cable which runs through the column is set 180 degrees off. Sometimes with having to disconnect and reconnect the Battery to get the electric releases to allow turning of the key, you can get out of sync with the column rod or cable.

That could happen and you installed the parts on the wrong side of the attachments, once you powered up the system, it locked you out.

Pontiac grand am 2004 3.4 6cylinder installed brand new battery altenator & starter all good car started took it for test drive everything shut off car wont start. lights radio still come on

Sounds like the security system activated or the ignition is bad. If you have an alarm installed remove it. If you don't then replace the ignition switch after checking all fuses in the fuse panel. There is one that can blow and will give you this symptom.

How to install ignition switch

follow these instructions:

Removing the Old Ignition Switch
1.

Remove the steering wheel housing. This will be held on by two screws. One will be in the front and the other will be in the back of the housing. The screws are usually Phillips heads or star-shaped heads.
2.

Locate the switch behind behind the key tumbler. It will be held by a screw.
3.

Remove the screw holding in the switch. The switch will work its way loose.
4.

Unattach the pigtail attached to the back of the ignition switch. They should lock in with a tab that needs to be folded up so the pigtail can be slid out.
5.

Remove the old switch. It will slide right out.

Installing the Ignition Switch
1.

Install the new switch. Inspect to make sure it looks like the old one.
2.

Plug the wiring into the back of the switch. The wiring pigtail will lock into place.
3.

Screw the switch back into position where the old one was removed. The new switch should sit in the same as the old one.
4.

Place the steering column housing back around the steering wheel. Install it as you took it off. The housing is set to fit around the column and fits one way.
5.

Tighten the screws on the housing. The housing should be snug.

I'm not an expert but I own a 1997 Jetta and ran into the same problem recently. I took the car to my VW mechanic and he thought it was the ignition switch. I took it in, he replaced the ignition switch ($53 part, $80 installation) and presto... the problem is fixed.
