You'll have to go to GM for this diagram, but sounds like it's just dirt plugged the movement of fluid to reverse clutch pack. Since Google is your friend, type in "fluid path diagram for a GM TH400 transmission" and see what comes up.

SOURCE: reverse switch on th400 transmission

If you are llokin at a late 60's Early 70's Nova and transmission set up. There is no wireing on transmissions. Wireing for that vintage cars were on either on the steering column under dash for column shifters. on in floor console for floor shifters.

1985 Delta 88 TH400 will go in reverse but won't go into any other gear. Could it be kickdown switch?

Should test your transmissions front pump for pressure take the two transmission lines off the radiator and run them into a 5 gallon bucket and start it and look in the bucket and see if you have pressure coming out one of the lines if no pressure or weak pressure front pump is done look for a replacement most older transmission can have reverse and no forward gear due to lack of pressure or low fluid level.

Diagram of hoses going to transmission on 93 chevy k1500 4x4

There are no vaccum hoses unless it is a TH400. The standard 4x4 overdrive trans could have a hose to the vent on top of the trans.

Th400 transmission exploded view

kick down cable not rusted stuck fully out and TH thinks you are passing other cars WOT?
no engine told, of 4 offered day1 new. even a diesel.
1989 oem stock THM-400? NO./

4.3L guessed
full trans code is 1989 !
THM700-R4/4L60/MD8 (4 speed is stock)
TH400 is 3speed not 4. ,now called 3L80 and ended in 1979 ,

but is really 1989 1971-1994 3L80HD (heavy duty version of TH400)<< yes

i just looked in the service manual
it shows this box THM 700R4 transmission. or TH400/3L80HD
and shows
Throttle Valve (TV) or Detent Cable one must not lose vacuum to the modulator of the transmission see 100% engine overload, and wants to use lower gears, so the vacuum must be there
and MOD is color coded, and must not be ignored, it must match the weight of the car or it will not shift correctly. Do not use the wrong MOD ever.

this is not a 4L80E/3L80E box no electric shifts. yes TCC lockup. sure.
TCC relay is ECM controlled. clutch main TC lockup. acts like gear 3.5.

A tuneup does not effect THM turbo hydra matic. box.
unless huge engine power loss subsequent vacuum now wrong.
the box shift, itself.
only mod and TV cable and full engine power, changes it and for sure
the GOVERNOR.

How to replace filter (diagram maybe?) in 400 turbo automatic transmission thats sitting in a 1985 fleetwood southwind motorhome?

  1. Check the fluid level. The first thing to check if you suspect that the transmission is acting up is the automatic transmission fluid (ATF) level in the transmission itself. The dipstick on the TH400 can be found inside the engine bay, on the passenger side toward the firewall (opposite the radiator). Pull the handle attached to the dipstick, which will remove it from the dipstick tube. Clean any fluid off and put it back into place, making sure that it seats all the way. Then remove it again and look at the tip of the stick. There are level indicators there, which will tell you if the transmission is low on ATF.

  2. 2

Check the linkages. The linkages that are connected to the shift lever can get out of alignment at times, causing sloppy or difficult shifter response. Look for abnormalities such as bent or broken parts, loose attachment points, or blockages that would prevent smooth shifting.

  3. 3

Change the filter. Unbolt all 13 transmission pan bolts (on the bottom of the TH400) and remove the pan. The filter is found in this area of the transmission. Filter kits, which include the filter and a new pan gasket, can be found at any auto parts store. Replace the filter and fill the transmission with new ATF (the TH400 requires six quarts). Do not put the bolts back on too tightly, as the gasket can become damaged. Six to 8 foot-pounds should be plenty. If no torque-wrench is available, just put them on as tight as you can by hand, and then turn them 1/2 revolution.

  4. 4

Inspect the cooler lines. The number-one killer of automatic transmissions is heat. If the cooler lines that come from the radiator are damaged or leaking, it might be necessary to replace them. These items can also be found at the local parts store.

I am looking for a thm400 ****** for 70 pontiac would a 1985 gmc sierra ****** work? i have a gm adapter plate , also underneath on right side of trannyon gmc there is no vacuum line does it build up...

The 1985 GMC Sierra transmission is a th700R4 overdrive transmission. The 700R4 does not utilize a vacuum modulator. Shift points are controlled by the T.P. or kickdown cabe. Proper adjustment of this cable is critical to transmission longevity. Your Pontiac, if originally equipped with a th400 transmission, has no means to connect this cable to the carburetor. I would not recommend this transmission swap. Also the th400 and the 700R4 use different sized drive shaft yokes, so your drive shaft cannot be used.
