Is there any videos or pictures that show the wiring diagram or where the wires end? Could there be any other solution that may not require removing the wires?

On the side of the headlight assembly there is a lever sticking out with a checkered section just above it you have to push the checkered part (it's the release for the mechanism) then lift it up and slide it forward, but be ready to catch it when it slides out. Next remove the connectors on the back and pull it all the way out. I usually set it on a towel or something so it wont roll around while working on it. Getting it back in is trickier though because you have to line the tracks up perfectly when you slide it in otherwise it'll bind up on you. If you search the DIY on vwvortex there's a pile of good info to make your life easier.

You can replace the bulbs wihout removing anything. The passenger side is super easy. The driver side is tougher because there isn't much room to stuff your hands, but it can be done. If you must pull the battery, make sure you have your radio security code on hand because you will need it after hooking the battery back up. I'd suggest not removing the battery and just taking your time to get the driver side bulb replaced.

Try inspecting the wires, socket, and bulb for defects. Try a wiggle test on the wires to that lamp. See if there is any effect. If nothing inspect the socket for hot spots and/or corrosion.

I have this same issue. I don't have a solution, however, I will say this. In the headlight assembly, there are two things that you must do to release the entire assembly for it to slide out. First is a little hex stud that is just inside the hood. You turn it one way to unlock it, and the assembly slides out a bit. Then you have to press on a lever, and pull out the entire assembly. When the whole thing goes back in (after replacing the bulb) the assembly is pushed into the wiring harness. In order to keep the assembly in good contact with the wiring harness, you have to lock the hex stud. However, it is VERY tricky to get the hex stud re-locked. If you turn the opposite way, you can go too far and it will unlock again. If you shine a light into that area, you will see below the assembly there is a little metal piece that gets pushed out when you turn the hex stud. Keep playing with the hex stud until it's in the correct position, and that should keep the assembly from sliding forward. If it doesn't stay (ie you get it to lock but it giggles free), you might have to have the assembly replaced (~$300). One of my headlights is really temperamental, the other is better behaved. Unfortunately, I'm probably looking at replacing the headlight assembly. After a year of battling it!!! :(
