2001 Ford ZX2 won't shift out of park. I have to use the shift release to get it out of park. I checked the fuses and they are all good.

I had this part replaced because my brake lights were staying on when I turned off the car. Could it have not been installed properly?

  • cutiehoney_2 Jun 04, 2009

clarification to the above comment. I replaced my brake switch already

I had this problem on my zx2, there is a solenoid on the right side of the shifter, if you take the center console out you can see it, you can zip tie it open and it will fix the problem, i wouldn't bother with replacing it, the only thing about zip tieing it is it will shift out of park even with the car off. but it fixed it, i have pictures i can send you if you need help, email me at [email protected]

Your brake release is not working on your shift linkage. I had this problem with mine and I was able to fix it myself. There is a fuse under the center counsel check that first if not you may need to replace the actuator.

2001 Escort ZX2: it wont go out of park...

There is a safety lock-out that keeps you from taking the car out of gear if you don't push the brake. If your brake lights still work then the switch is good. Also, some people have reported that if the high mount brake light is bad it will keep the car from being shifted out of park. If all of your brake lights work then the solenoid is bad. Remove the center console to get to the solenoid. Since the solenoid is expensive most people just zip-tie the solenoid open so that you don't have to push the brake to shift it from park.

My gearshift is stuck and will not shift

Check the fuse for the shift-lock mechanism. Also check the brake pedal sensor - do the tail lights come on when you press the pedal? If you need to get the car out of park, pop open the cover and press the shift-lock override button located near the base of the gearshift lever on the console.

2001 ford escort stuck in park lever won't move starts normally

If it wont move into gear, the safety switch is malfunctioning. You can take the plug out of the hole on the upper right side of the console just to the right of the gear shift lever. put a philips screwdriver in the hole and press down. this will manually release the gear shifter mechanism.

Ford 2001 excort zx2

Just check the fuse box for busted fuses. They are properly labelled as headlights, park lights, etc..
Also check the wirings for short circuited lines. Further-
more check the bulbs, if these are still ok.

Transmission problem with 2001 Ford Escort

Sounds like a problem with the shift interlock. Here's how it works:You put your foot on the brake pedal, the brake pedal switch sends voltage to a solenoid mounted on your shifter. The solenoid unlocks the shifter, and you remove it from Park. When the interlock doesnt work,it's usually the interlock solenoid mounted on the shifter malfunctioning, however the brake pedal switch,or wires to and from can also be at fault.
