You need to know how this all works , BCM - body control module controls all main powers for the vehicle . Ignition switch is a low voltage input to the BCM . For what ever position you move ignition switch too ,the BCM energizes relays to supply battery voltage . The BCM is called PMM - power mode master , also sends messages over the GMLAN serial data network to other modules to request start an a power up message . These systems are not for an unqualified DIY'er to mess with . Complex electronics involved .
The body control system consists of the body control module (BCM), communications, and various input and outputs. Some inputs, outputs and messages require other modules to interact with the BCM. The BCM also has discrete input and output terminals to control the vehicle's body functions. The BCM is wired to the GMLAN high speed serial data buss and the GMLAN low speed serial data buss and acts as a gateway between them. If the BCM does not communicate the vehicle will not start due to the inability of the engine control module (ECM)/powertrain control module (PCM) and theft deterrent module (TDM) to communicate without the BCM providing the gateway function.
Power Mode Master
This vehicles body control module (BCM) functions as the power mode master (PMM). The ignition switch is a low current switch with multiple discrete ignition switch signals to the PMM for determination the power mode that will be sent over the serial data circuits to the other modules that need this information, and so the PMM will activate relays and other direct outputs of the PMM as needed. The PATS transceiver is located behind the steering column shroud and communicates with the encoded ignition key. During each vehicle start sequence, the PATS transceiver reads the encoded ignition key identification code and sends data to the instrument cluster.
The control functions are contained in the instrument cluster. The instrument cluster carries out all of the PATS functions, such as receiving the identification code from the encoded ignition key, validating the PATS key code and sending an enable message through the controller area network (CAN) to the powertrain control module (PCM). The instrument cluster initiates the key interrogation sequence when the vehicle ignition switch is turned to ON or START. All elements of PATS must be functional before the engine is allowed to start. If any of the components are not working correctly, the vehicle does not start.

In most cases a bad ignition switch will not supply power to certain electrical functions. ( dash lights wipers heater motor etc ). You are more likely to have a problem with an ignition module or crank sensor causing this issue
Once the battery is charged, the ignition and shifter should function.
Have the battery charged first or jump start the vehicle and see if all is functioning.

The Ignition Key (Transponder)
The ignition key for PASS-Key® III equipped vehicles is a typical ignition key using a transponder pellet located in the end of the key. The ignition key transponder value is used in order to determine if a valid ignition key is being used in order to start the vehicle. When the ignition key is inserted into the ignition cylinder and the PASS-Key® III module detects the ignition voltage (the ignition switch is in RUN or START) the module measures the transponder pellet value. The PASS-Key® III module validates this value and performs the following functions:
• If the ignition key transponder value is valid, the PASS-Key® III module performs the following (system enable) functions:
- The PASS-Key® III module sends a pulse width modulated signal to the PCM to request fuel enable.
- The PCM enables the fuel system.
- This function enables the engine to start.
• If the ignition key transponder value is invalid, the PASS-Key® performs the following (system disable) functions:
- The PASS-Key® III module does not send the fuel request signal to the PCM.
- The PCM does not enable the fuel system.
- This function does not enable the engine to start and run. The engine may start and then stall due to residual fuel in the fuel system.
The PASS-Key® III module can identify up to 10 valid key codes to operate the vehicle.
