Power Loss Mercedes 220 cdi '98 Trouble code P1403

I have problem with my 220 cdi '98. Trouble code says P1403 (exhaust gas recirculation - HFM-regulation).

I cleaned the EGR valve completely and changed the hot film meter but nothing changed. On the highway the car drives smooth, but once the car turns on idle it switches to secure mode and I lose all power.

To reset it I have to turn off the engine and re-start.

Any idea what can cause this?

Thanks!

I have exactly the same problem with my MB E290TD. The same DTC, also changed MAF, also need to torn of the engine for 5-10 sec to get the engine running well. And I checked all vacums - they are all good.
Also I have changed egr transducers (both of them) for two times, didnt helped.
Cleaned and checked for holding vacum EGR, good - didnt helped.
It seems like a mechanical problem that affects the electronic seestem - but i can not figure out what ir is.
The strange thing is that you can tur engine on in the morning and it can imediatly cach the foult. But there are days that you can drive all dai long and the car will run fine. That pises me off. Because I have done everything that can be done - but NO ONE can tell the exact explonation of the P1403 (exhaust gas recirculation - HFM-regulation). Every explonation is a quess.?

It sounds like you have a vacuum leak somewhere between your valve and your source. A common vac leak that occurs on the 220 is at the vac. rubber y located at the back of the intake manifold. Follow your vac. line from the egr to the switchover valve and from the switch over valve to the source. Which is probably the y connecter

Jackers start your own post, OK?
and not mix yours up with 3 other jackers. and OP./
that is asking for lies, guessing and wrong answers
1990s cars had horrible EGR then
the top failure besides the EGR main valve
is the exhaust path through all that is carbon packed up. and we cleaned that path up end to end.
newer cars EGR main is elect motor drive.
old cars are RUB GOLDBERG horror.
no 220 sold in USA< parts house shows none.

secure mode means limphome mode I guess
ASE names I use not German.!
C220 or E220 or S220?
the old cars 1998 has vacuum operated EGR mains
and all cars EGR is off line at IDLE and WOT
and if stuck open at idle engine stalls or shakes hard at 400 rpm no 800 normal
the tests done are>
1: make sure main closes at idle
if not it is bad or vacuum to it is wrong
if vacuum is correct and valve is good
then the exhaust path is bad.
1,2,3 test
if vacuum fails that is tricky how that works, ASK

99 maxima ran till it was parked now it turns over will not start gave code p0400 any ideas

The fault is somewhere around the EGR valve - probably the EGR valve or the throttle position sensor.

Before replacing any sensors try removing and cleaning the EGR.

Check engine light code P0401 98 Ford expedition

OBD-II Trouble Code P0401 - Insufficient EGR Flow

EGR stands for Exhaust Gas Recirculation. It is part of the vehicle emmissions system, and is used to reduce combustion temperature and pressure to control Oxides of Nitrogen. There are generally three parts to the EGR system: the EGR valve, an actuator solenoid, and a differential pressure sensor EGR (DPFE). These things work together to deliver the correct amount of recirculation based on engine temperature, load, etc. The P0401 code means that OBD detected an insufficient amount of EGR. You may notice drivability problems such as pinging (a.k.a. pre-ignition knock) when the engine is under load or the vehicle is at higher speeds. There may also be other symptoms.

A code P0401 most likely means one or more of the following has happened:
The DPFE (differential pressure feedback EGR) sensor is faulty and needs to be replaced
There is a blockage in the EGR (tube), most likely carbon buildup
The EGR valve is faulty
The EGR valve may not be opening due to a lack of vaccuum

Check it and keep us updated. Hope this helps (remember to rating this free answer).
