Seems the bearing on my ac compressor has went out. Loud rattling and terrible gas mileage. Can I bypass the compressor with a shorter belt as quick fix?

I am sure the issue is belt related noise, it must be inspected not just for the belt but the idlers and pulleys the belt runs on, they may have a worn bearings or other damage, if all looks good then and only then change the belt. I hope this info is helpful.

You can buy an A/C bypass pulley from an O'reilly auto or anyone that supplies Dorman parts. the pulleys are cheap and allow you to mount things and use the stock serp belt. You will have no AC ,though. The kit is designed with the intent of eliminaing the compressor, which is very expensive to replace.

Unplug wires going to the compressor, and let it freewheel, if it's not noisy in that mode. A/C compressor won't kick in if not connected. A lot less hassle than going the other way.

Good news...if you've got the 4 cylinder model, O'Reilly Auto Parts has a belt made by Gates Model #K060806. If you have the 6 cylinder model, it's Gates Model #K060623. I'm guessing you tried AutoZone first...I hate AZ for this reason alone. Anyways, hope this proves useful. Have a great night!
SOURCE: what is easiest fix on a/c compressor or to bypass it and drive?
not very easy to change- you have to evac the a/c system- then all your work is underneath. they may sell a bypass pully to put in place of the compressor- but i dont beleive you can just put a shorter belt on. hope this helps and good luck
