I am having trouble fiquiring out which wire goes to which plug. The wires are different lengths and the correct wire length has to go specifically with the correct plug. I have the firing order dia

I should have waited until after installation before replacing the wires, but here I am stuck with the replacement wires and not clear on which wire goes where according to firing order and correct length size.

Even though I have a firing order diagram (135) (246). It is still not helpful in that the wires are different lengths in size and I was told that all wires has to be put back correctly as before.

The firing order is 1-2-3-4-5-6
Cyl #1 is front left when looking at engine front to back
left coil pack connects to cyls. 5-2
center coil pack connects to cyls. 3-6
right coil pack connects to cyls. 4-1
It doesn't matter which connector on the coil you use just that the cylinder is connected to the proper coil pack (the coil fires both plugs at the same time, twice per each full 4 stroke cycle)

Thanks for the information it was very beneficial of the wire installation, although there seems to be some other problem. I never did use the dielectric grease although I don't think that mattered. A friend told me that it sounds like a starter problem. I will have a local mechanic to check it out so thanks again.

  • Robert Levine Dec 23, 2013

The dielectric grease wont effect the running, just ease of removal in the future and help in damp weather, what in the car doing that your friend thinks its a starter?

  • Robert Levine Dec 23, 2013

Should have waited for the installation of what, before changing the wires?

  • Lawrence Ware
    Lawrence Ware Dec 23, 2013

What was meant by that is that I should have left all old wires on and bought all new ones and changed the old wires out with the new ones one by one instead of taking all the old wires off and taking them in for warranty replacement of new ones. Had I bought new ones first and changed those out with old ones accordingly, I could have took the old wires back in for warranty replacement refund. The car was cranking smoothly before removal of the wires and now after all wire installation it will not crank at all but a friend said it sounds as if the starter has played out by it not firing up not cranking at all.

  • Robert Levine Dec 23, 2013

If that not cranking problem started when you changed out the wires, I would suspect that the plug wires are connected improperly, that can make the engine almost lock up by firing the cylinder at the wrong time, it can also cause backfiring etc. double and triple check the plug wiring before swaping out the starter. I would hate to see you spend the time and money on a starter just to have the same problem still. It's just odd that the started would quit working just as you changed the plug wires, possible but not likely. what was wrong with the original plug wires that you were having them replaced under warranty?

  • Robert Levine Dec 23, 2013

please check to see if the 8th digit of the V.I.N number is an "M" just to be sure that the engine firing order is correct

  • Lawrence Ware
    Lawrence Ware Dec 23, 2013

I have checked the vn number and the the 8th digit number is showing to be M. My car started using more gasoline and missing a bit which led me to believe that it needed plugs and wire replacement . I had a local mechanic to set the plugs before taking them back home and having them installed by a local friend I hope tha there wasn't any damage done to the plugs while installing them. So now we are not sure where the problem lies.

SOURCE: 1990 chevy 350 distributor wiring diagram and firing order

The firing order is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2.
The distributor rotates in a clockwise direction. The engine must be on the compression stroke on the #1 cylinder. Line up the timing marks. Remove the cap and the rotor should be pointing to approximately the 5 o'clock position.

Good Luck

Well, I've seen .060 and .035 on Chevies before, but not .040. Call Auto Zone. Tell them what year, make, model, and engine you have. If they tell you it is .040 then I am lost.

Are spark plug wires for a 2003 Ford ranger 3.0 2wd XLT measure by length?

All spark plug wire have to be a certain length to fit between the coil and the spark plug. But don't just put any plug wire on your engine. There are different typess of cable and fitting the wrong one can affect how your engine runs. Your best option here is to take your vehicle details with you and buy the correct replacements for your vehicle.

My #1 and #3 spark plug wires are switched. Do I need to take off manifold to make this right?

*If you have ANY doubts or worries about working on your vehicle get a good mechanic to do it for you.*
Why do you think the wires have been switched? Has the vehicle been serviced recently? That would be the only reason the wires would have been removed.
Is yours the 2.7 V6 engine? Spark plug leads are usually different lengths to go to specific spark plugs so leads 1 and 3 will be very different lengths. That means the switch probably hasn't happened at the spark plug end. Check the connections at the other end of the plug wires, at the coil pack end? This is a lot easier to get to and a lot less work.

Am i suppose to have one plug where the threading end is longer then all other five is there a specific cylinder that goes to.?

talking engines
all of the plug thread lengths are the same
if the thread is longer then what will happen is that combustion material will lodge in the thread exposed in the cylinder and that will strip out the thread when the plug is removed
ONly use the correct thread lengths as recommended by the manufacturer

Spark plug wires

I think I answered this. I believe the numbers are so that you have the correct length for each plug. There is no difference, except for the length. To isolate your problem pull one wire at a time and when the engine smoothness does not change, you've found the bad one. Check the plug. If it is okay, replace that wire with one of your old ones to see if that cures the problem. If that does not help, you might check the cap to see if there are any hairline cracks in it. I hope this is helpful.

Does the kw on the spark plug wires matter? if so anyone know which wire goes to which plug? its a 5.3 vortec

No, all plug wires are the same, as long as the length and connectors are correct and in the right place (consult a repair manual). Remember when all else fails RTFB! (Read the @$&!? Book)

97 s10 spark plug wire length.

No, the longer length will not cause your problem. The longer wires are simply for the plugs longest from the distributor cap (or coil pack) to the spark plug, and no particular length is critical, just as long as all wires will fit.
Do you mean it ran fine before you changed the wires and plugs? If so, you may have one or two not fully seated at one end or the other. Go back and make sure each wire is pushed in correctly, You should hear or feel the new wire snap over the new spark plug.

1999 ford ranger 3.0 spark plug wiring diagram

More important than the length is the routing of the wires to reduce chances of cross-feeding of the ignition pulse into another wire.
Don't know if any place shows the routing of the plug wires.. You may need to look at another engine like yours to see how the wires are routed and which length wire goes where. Good luck.

HOw to replace spark plug wires on a 1998 Mitsubishi montero sport?

Installing New Spark Plug Wires Is Simple, Especially Of One Wire Is Replaced At A Time. Compare The Length Of The Old Wire With The Length Of The New Wire. Replace Each Wire With One Of Equal Length.Make Sure The New Wire Is Fully Attached On The Plug And In The Distributor Or Coil Module.

Spark Plug Wire Replacement Is More Complicated If All The Wires Are Removed At Once. Then You Must Use The Engine Firing Order And Cylinder Numbers To Route Each Wire Correctly.
