Help! Air conditioner causes squeal soon after turned on

Hi, My car makes a squealing noise when I turn on the air conditioner. Sometimes it begins right away and other times it takes a few minutes. What is the most likely problem and the estimated repair cost? Thanks from OKC.

The ac is belt driven, If one of the belts are loose it will make a squealing noise. Turning on the air puts more strain on the belts. If this is the case all you would have to do is tighten the belt or belts. This would probably take a service tech just a few minutes. Probably under $100.00 dollars..........

Look st you A/C compressor. There should be a way to tighten the belt. If this does not help you might need to replace the belt. I might would replace belt and tighten. Hope this helps.

2004 Chrysler Voyager, had an acrid burning smell and a lot of smoke when heater is turned on, also a rattling/squealing noise, all stops when heater turned off?

you more than likely have a sciezed air con compressor. most modern cars have climate control which uses air con even when demisting and when engaged the electric clutch tries to engage but the pump itself will not turn, clutch will get red hot and burn your belts

Squealing sound when air conditioning is on and turning left

same problem...not an a/c issue. When the fan is on and when you turn left.sounds like something rubbing in the blower. took the blower off, no obvious blockage.

I have 1996 Kia Sephia. When the air conditioner is on, the power steering doesn't work about half of the time and the car makes a squealing noise when turning, starting, and sometimes when idling....

Loose belt-tighten or worn idler pulley bearings.Tighten belts first and if the squeel is still there remove belt and check all pulley bearings.Grab the pulley by hand and give it a wriggle-there shouldn't be any play axially

I currently have had my air conditioner die on me. When you turn it on it sounds like its working but nothing comes out. As soon as the air conditioning went my car started squealing when I accelerate.

The a/c compressor clutch might have locked up it should be free spinning when not engaged but could cause a belt to squeal and possiblly break if locked up

Air conditioner

The squeeling is the belt because the air compresor is likely seizing. At idle it can't turn the compressor, in motionthe compressor probably turns and cools the air. Most air conditioners come on when the defroster is on.

There is a squealing noise when I turn on the air conditioner - does the belt need to be replaced?

check the belt for cracks, if belt look ok adjust it, some times the belt will come out of adjustment. After you have adjusted the belt if it still makes that squealing noise the a/c compressor could be locking up and will have to be replace.

Squealing sound when I turn on the air conditioner in the car

It sounds to me like its a loose compressor belt that gets hot and stops, have it tightened or replaced if its old and brittle. could also be the compressor going bad,

Squealing noise

check all pulleys. and also, check the air conditioner compressor. it may need to be serviced. the compressor can make a squealing noise at times if the bearings are bad. make sure the tension is correct as well.
