Simply the cruise control on my GTO (1991) automatic doesn't work. It wasn't working when I bought it 7 months ago. This is my first attempt to resolve the problem. It may well be something so simple.
If the cruise control switch seems to work then the problem is in this area and is a little odd I know.
First thing is to check the hoses and cables on vacuum pump throttle control. Yes I know that sounds odd but there's a vacuum pump that is used to give the smooth accelleration feeling with cruize control. Crazy mitsu engineers.
Open the hood. On the far right there's a metal squarish box with a hard metal thin pipes comming out of it with one guiding the throttle cable to the throttle on the back of the engine. Another to a vacuum solenoid with a cable and a hose attached. It's a round can somwhere behind the engine on the firewall. Remove the control box and make sure there's a small right angle hose on the bottom that connects to the vacuum pump. unfortunately there's no easy test for the system as you have to be moving over 25mph to use cruise but i would start with the areas I've outlined and look for leaks or stuck cables.

CHECK YOUR VACUUM LINES, THERE SHOULD BE ONE ALMOST IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FIRE WALL THAT JUNCTIONS TO 2 OTHERS WITH A LITTLE CANISTER ABOUT AS BIG AROUND AS YOUR THUMB, FREQUENTLY THIS VACUUM LINE WILL COME LOOSE OR THE VALVE (SMALL CANISTER) WILL GO BAD CAUSING THE CRUISE CONTROL NOT TO OPERATE
