Not getting spark

My car turns over but will not start .i am getting power to the coil packs but it seems that i am not getting power out of the coil packs. how do i test the coil packs?

  • Anonymous Apr 24, 2009

My car died at a signal light and has not stated since. I am not getting any spark to the coil. I have replaced the spark plugs and spark plug wires. The copils are operating correctly and I am at a loss. A friend suggested a diagnotsic test but my check engine light never came on.

    Any suggestions?

Testing the coil packs.

1. Get an INSULATED wire and hook it to a ground on the car.
2. Get some one to help you
3. pull a spark plug wire off the coil
4. hold grounded wire close to, but not touching, the part where the spark plug wire connects
5. keep hands away from coil and have your helper turn the engine over ( start car and turn off)
6. if there was a spark between the wire and the coil pack it is good. if not, the coil pack needs replaced
7. replace the spark plug wire
8. test the rest

I have a 98 vw jetta gl ABA and it wont start run.

I would check for spark on the ignition coil and the spark plug. If no spark, check the power and signal to the ignition coil. The ignition coil large wires are 12volts power and the other three is a signal to electronic firing circuit from ECM. Testing the power is easy, for testing for trigger signal, use a 12v LED test light.

Replaced plugs and coil pack on 2001 ford taurus now car will not start

You will need to figure out if you have spark to the plugs, and if not- if you have voltage to the coil to proceed.

2007 nissan titan turns over but wont start no spark to the plugs .

The problem could be in the spark plugs. Usually if just one of the spark plugs is not producing the spark needed, the engine would still start. It may run rough, but will still start. If none of the spark plugs are producing a spark (or firing) then this could be the culprit. The spark plugs gets power to spark from coil packs. So check the coil pack first. If the coil pack checked ok then its faulty spark plugs causing this problem. Also remove the spark plug connection and clean it and reconnect it and recheck. In some cases this helps. ---------------That's it.

My '93 F250 5.8 l Automatic was turning over slowly when cranking to start. Replaced battery no change; Then after sitting for 2 mo. turning key to start produced only a click and dead gauges (battery...

The battery to starter connection has power.the battery is ok.but there are many other possibilities related to battery and its other connections, the spark plugs, the fuel pump, the fuel itself, the sensors(o2 sensor, maf sensor)the valve(IAC valve, egr valve). Most probably the spark plug, the coil pack and crank shaft sensor. This 3 are not getting power to get the car start.

There are some possibilities which you will have to check in this case:--

1) First of all check the power and voltage to the battery. With meter it will show exact 12 volt if the battery is charged. If the voltage is less get the battery charged at local auto repair shop. If the battery is internally drained and not getting charged then its time to replace the battery.

2) When you crank the car do you see spark coming at the spark plug? If no then its time to check the spark plugs and coil pack. If the spark plugs are not worn out and looks new then its time to check coil pack. The spark plug gets power to spark from coil pack.

3) The other thing to check in this case is the starter solenoid of the car. If the battery is charged and you start the car then it gives power to the starter to start the car. But if starter is faulty or not connected properly then car will not start.

4) The other thing to check in this case is fuel in the car. If there is fuel in the car then check the blockages in the fuel pump if the fuel pump looks proper then check the fuel filter above the fuel pump.

5) If all the above possibilities mentioned above checked out OK/perfect then it's a electrical issue and the wiring's in the car needs to be checked. The car gets power from the battery to get started. so the wires from battery needs to be checked one by one.

No spark runns fine then loses spark wait 10 minutes starts

The spark plugs receives power to spark from coil pack.Check the power at the coil pack and also check the voltage at the coil pack with meter. If the coil pack shows proper power as well as voltage then its fault in spark plugs.Otherwise its faulty coil pack. The coil pack receives power from battery.so also check the voltage of the battery it should be exact 12 volt.
If the battery shows low voltage then the battery needs to be re-charged.
Then check out.

Car does not seem to have spark.where is ignition coil car

There's a coil pack that usually sits right on top of the engine. Follow the spark plug wires. Usually the coil pack won't fail completely you might lose 2 cylinders but not all 6. Are you getting a check engine light? It could be the cam or crankshaft sensor, they send signals to the coil pack via the power train control modual.

Car shut off and wont fully start

sounds like you have some bad coil packs, something is not allowing spark, what kind of ignition sys do you have?
Distributer or coils?
either way you have to have spark, if its a dist, pull the cap and see what kind of shape it is in, no corrosion, water, oil or anything should be there, if it looks good, have someone turn the motor over to make sure the rotor is spinning, if not, your cam is not driving it, so thats a broken shaft or timing chain
coil packs, start testing the pack for power, if no power keep going back withe the wires to the relays, sometimes they get hot and have a intermitten problem at first then they just go bad, they are in teh fuse box and should be labled
