I had the same problem on my Mazda as well as other vehicles. The way I fixed it was I changed the oxygen sensor which will run you about 15-20 dollars. The oxygen sensor looks like a spark plug with a wire attached on the exhaust manifold. Make sure you spray it with lubricant first so you don't snap it off. If this does not work then you might have a problem.
You need to get the codes read. because of the age of this vehcle it doesn't have obd2 you may be able to get them read at some auto parts stores for free it will give you a general direction where to look for the problem the standard cost at a shop is around 100 dollars to get the codes pulled hope this helps
