Will not pass inpection, 5 sensors not ready--V6 3.0

My 1998 mm sport will not pass inspection because 5 sensors are not ready. Vehicle has 255000 miles but still runs good. There are no error codes showing. Engine service light comes on normally and goes off when I start up. I have driven the vehicle about 2000 miles trying to get the sensors ready. I have taken the btry cables off over night to reset computer, also replaced btry terminals. Took it to dealer today and the computer was receiving data from all sensors. The dealer said to drive for 60 miles non stop and they would reset. Didn't work. Sensors not ready are EGR,Catalyst,Evap,O2 Sens,O2 Sens Htr. Any ideas?

Thanks Keven for the response. I drove the car for about 125 miles didn't turn it off and checked the system with my scan tool and it still shows all 5 sensors not ready. This has been an ongoing problem for almost 2 months. thanks again for the answer

The monitors are called "non continuous readiness monitors" 5 of them for the mit 1998 montero sport....in order to have them set to "ready" status to pass the computer part of the smog emissions test....you have to drive the car through a very specific "drive cycle" , You can get the exact drive cycle parameters for the car at google search "mitsubishi montero sport 1998 readiness monitors drive cycle." ...its about driving in a very exact pattern at speeds at time intervals(the obd computer on the car has programmed it that way...the 02 sensors generally will set if you drive the vehicle at 40 mph for 2 minutes continuously(check with a cheap Autel obd2 scanner($25.00 on amazon.com); then the catalyst monitor the vehicle needs to be driven at 60 mph for 10 seconds and then slow down to 40 mph for 50 seconds and then finally drive for 2 more minutes at 40 mph ....be mindful that this may take several attempts but keep at this parameter and you'll have them set....and you have to find a safe long empty road or highway to do some of the drive cycles...like the o2 sensors and catalyst monitors.) The EVAP monitor is the last one you have to set and this one has to be done very specifically..the vehicle has to have the other monitors set and then let the car sit overnight to cool down as the evap monitor requires a cold start; immediatelly after starting within 15 minutes.....drive the vehicle at 50-55 mph mph for two minutes and then increase immediately to 60 mph for 2 more minutes.....this should set the last monitor..again check the google search site above with the mitsubishi service bulletin on google search for exact details.

THEN if you finally get it set...remember that you should NOT disconnect the battery after having set the monitors...........otherwise the obd2 computer will erase the readiness monitors and being deleted you will have to REDO the drive cycles again.......waste of gas and time.

And ALSO in order to pass smog finally your car has to pass the biennial tail pipe 5 gas analyzer test....usually with mitsubishis of the 1998 model the problem is the high HCs.....to solve this you will have to replace the valve stem seals(24 of them in the cylinder heads) and also the piston rings and oil control holes in the pistons.....I had to clear 6 holes / piston...they had been carbonized shut after 350000 miles of wear and tear cycles. This is an engine rebuild.....so unless you have lot of time on your hands and you are interested in fixing it yourself........took me 3 weeks to do it myself....you may have to go through the CA BAR(bureu of automotive repair) they'll help pay for about $400.00 towards the repair......

if you are inclined to do this if you pass the computer obd2 test but fail the emissions section then you can begin with the manual and order the valve stem seals on amazon.com

2000 Ford Explorer Sport, drive cycle?

All in the link, but this is it. Also good to use a bottle of Fuel System Cleaner

I wanted to post this on here because a Ford technician was nice enough to give me this information. Here is what needs to be done to load all the parameters in your computer so your vehicle will pass inspection after your check engine light problem has been fixed. This will work for all explorers 1996 and up. Here is what you do. This will save you from having to drive 3 or 4 hundred miles to load the computer.....

1. The gas has to be between 1/4 and 3/4 full. Not above or below.

2. Start the vehicle and put it in drive and hold the brake.

3. Turn on the air conditioner and the rear defroster.

4. Sit in drive for 2 minutes.

5. Turn off AC and rear defroster.

6. Drive the vehicle up to 55 mph.

7. Decelerate down to 20 MPH, do not touch the gas or the brake.

8. You must do this 3 times and let the vehicle get cold between cycles.

I did this today and my vehicle passed inspection. I hope this helps others that need to get their rigs inspected and don't want to drive around for a couple hundred miles.....

NYS inspection, the vehicle will pass 6 out of 9 checks but will not do the others, with no pending codes. How can I get it to pass the other three to complete the inspection?

What vehicle do you have and what are the monitors that will not set? Also, in NYS you can have one monitor that is not ready.

Idle up and down.. have changed 0-2 sensors and mass air flow andthrotle position sensor but still has problem and wont pass inspection.. said cat converter not ready

sounds like the IAC (idle air control valve) or possibly a vaccum leak. As far as the cat. converter not ready, the vehicle must be driven a certain distance or go through a certain amount of drive cycles for all the systems to be monitered. Most of the time i just take the vehicle for a 50 mile drive on the freeway and that usually does it.

I have a 2001 nissan pathfinder 4w. The OBD system-readiness status: Says catalytic converters, NOT READY; oxygen sensors, NOT READY; evaporative system, NOT READY. So did not pass inspection, I was told...

You have to re-set the obd via using Nissan's approved drive-cycle which is;

1. Start the engine when the engine coolant

temperature gauge needle points to C. Allow

the engine to idle until the gauge needle

points between the C and H (normal operating

temperature).

2. Accelerate the vehicle to 55 MPH (88

km/h), then quickly release the accelerator

pedal completely and keep it released for at

least 6 seconds.

3. Quickly depress the accelerator pedal for a

moment, then drive the vehicle at a speed

of 53 to 60 MPH (86 to 96 km/h) for at least

5 minutes.

4. Stop the vehicle.

5. Accelerate the vehicle to 35 MPH (55 km/h)

and maintain the speed for 20 seconds.

6. Repeat steps 4 through 5 at least 3 times.

7. Accelerate the vehicle to 55 MPH (88 km/h)

and maintain the speed for at least 3 minutes.

8. Stop the vehicle and turn the engine off.

9. Repeat steps 1 through 8 at least one more

time.

If step 1 through 7 is interrupted, repeat the

preceding step. Any safe driving mode is acceptable

between steps. Do not stop the engine

until step 7 is completed. If you cannot or

do not want to perform the driving pattern, a
NISSAN dealer can conduct it for you.

Emissions test comes up not ready - can't pass inspection

Under the hood, there is a fuse block. I believe it is on the driver's side of your vehicle. Open that box, and pull the "ECU" fuse. Leave the fuse out for at least 5 minutes. Put the fuse back in, start the car, and let it idle for at least another 5 minutes. Do not drive the car, touch the gas, or even look at the gas pedal for these 5 minutes, as the ECU is remapping itself. This will properly reset the ecu and clear the codes. After this you may drive the car.
