My fan speeds 1 , 2, 3 did not work, soon speed 4 went and speed 5 only worked now none of them work I have no heat now. Before speed 5 stopped it started making a loud noise lasted a few days then died. I have been told replace the blower motor and then I was told replace the resistor, so I wonder which it is? Thanks

Blower motor turns off when key is off (thats OK). When powered up the fan speed fluxuates on off (yes off) and 1-2-3. Sometimes it will shut off when moved to 1-2-3 levels. Replaced the resistor pack with the coils (no change) replaced the relay by the resistor (no change).
Yes its the blower motor resistor.
More then likley theres some trash or something in it, or possibly the motor itself is on it's way out. There not that bad to pull out of that body car, just pull it out and see what you can see.
The blower motor is under the glove compartment
You can replace the resistor on your own. Please find a detailed diagram which would guide you to do it.

Okay do you have manual or automatic climate control.
if its manual chances are your blower motor has biten the dust. a bad blower motor will cook the resistor block in short order due to it drawing to much current. but if this condition is prolonged it will burn the contacts in the manual climate control head unit.
now things get dicey with the automatic climate control, but thankfully most vehicles were not equipped with automatic climate control.
in addition to the blower motor cooking the resistor block, it will first draw excessive current from the auto climate module. it will began to malfunction and do strange things like shut off on its own. command a/c even when its off. drain the battery.
you must remember that the blower motor is a one speed motor. the coils that are on the resistor block are what give you the various speeds.
were any of those coils burnt up on the orignal block. or did you not pull it out to check it?
i could possibly gamble on the fact that the resistor swap didnt change anything, saying that the resistor is not the problem. i would focus on the dash unit as the problem of your erratic blower issues.

SOURCE: Blower motor or resistor?
I had a truck about the same year with the same problem, it was the wiring harness, but id check the resistor and the fan first before replacing anythings,

I purchased a new resistor and I did not install it; but I did hooked it up to the connector to see if this would solve my problem. It did not solved the problem. I did not want to go through the hassle to install the resistor without testing to see if it solved my problen first.
Then I hook up a new heater relay to see if this was my problem. That did not change my problem.
You think it may be the blower motor itself going bad? Please confirm; for the blower motor does run great.
Could it be the on-off switch? I did pull that switch and it does get very warm to the touch when the blower motor is engaged.
Looking forward to your expertise.
