2004 chev avalanche---4 wheel drive kicking in

On my 2004 avalanche the 4 wheel drive has been engaging automatically when I am in 2 wheel drive on dry pavement----does it without warning and sometimes will not disengage----have to go to 4wd auto, then try to get 2wd-------------faulty sensor? or connection?

Thanks
Bill Smith

SOURCE: 4 Wheel drive not engaging.

After finding a vacuum line that was off from the auto body shop that never was reconnected , after they removed it when they replaced the left side fender from a crash. Reconnected it and now it works. It was hard to find. Due to it is located below some other componets and wires.

Sounds like the transfer case may be low on fluid. Does it do it in 4 high as well as 4 low? if so then its either low on fluid or its on its last leg. It just takes normal automatic trans. fluid if I remember correctly. It should have a drain plug on the bottom and a fill/check plug up towards the top a little ways from that.

SOURCE: chev 4wd problem

You need to have it scanned. It sounds like a bad speed sensor in the transfercase.

My 2004 GMC Envoy SLT will go into four low but not for higher automatic four wheel drive and we'll also go into two wheel drive what's the problem

There are a few potential issues that could be causing your 2004 GMC Envoy SLT to go into 4-low but not 4-high or 2-wheel drive. Some possible causes include:
  1. Transfer case issues: The transfer case is responsible for controlling the engagement of the different drive modes. If the transfer case is damaged or malfunctioning, it may not be able to engage 4-high or 2-wheel drive.
  2. Shift motor issues: The shift motor is responsible for controlling the engagement of the transfer case. If the shift motor is damaged or malfunctioning, it may not be able to engage 4-high or 2-wheel drive.
  3. Vacuum issues: The vacuum system is responsible for controlling the engagement of the transfer case. If there is a problem with the vacuum system, it may not be able to engage 4-high or 2-wheel drive.
  4. Wiring issues: The wiring that controls the transfer case and shift motor can become damaged or corroded over time. This can cause the transfer case to not engage 4-high or 2-wheel drive.
  5. Control module issues: The control module that controls the transfer case and shift motor can fail. This can cause the transfer case to not engage 4-high or 2-wheel drive.
It's best to diagnose the issue by a professional mechanic, who can perform a proper diagnosis and repair the issue. They will be able to determine the specific cause of the problem and recommend the appropriate repairs.

4 wheel drive on 2001 chev blazer won't kick in..lights flash, hear sound under floor board as if something moved/slid but won't go into 4 wheel

It sounds like the motor for engaging the 4wd isn't completely engaging, you're going to have to crawl under the truck and watch it while someone engages it. I cannot express enough how dangerous this could be to the person who climbs under the vehicle, take every precaution necessary even as far as lifting the truck up on jack stands on all 4 corners with all wheels off the ground.
