My Escape's check engine light came on, so I hooked up my code reader and it returned P0402. I replace the EGR valve, erased the code, and the light came back on after one day. I then replaced the DPFE sensor, erased the code, and the light came back on a day later. Is there anything else that I can do to replace this code?
Ok here is the solution when I had the exact same problem with my 2001 Ford Escape:
Replace:
Idler air control valve
EGR vaccum sylenoid
EGR valve
I did all of this work myself (and as a girl it was not hard at all), it cost me around $170.00 for all of the parts, had it done in less than 2 hrs., erased the codes and have not had a problem since then! I hope this helps you out, cuz it sure would have helped me out when I encountered the same problem.

I had the exact same problem with my 2001 Ford Escape and after replacing the dpfe sensor (twice) and the egr valve, I was told that I needed to replace the Idler air control valve, the egr vaccumm sylenoid and the egr valve. I did all of the work myself (I am a girl so you know it couldn't have been easy), bought all the parts at Autozone, spent around 170.00, erased the codes and I have been good ever since. I sure hope that this helps you!
