It sounds like the "bendix drive" is gone in your starter. This is the assembly that engages and disengages the starter to the engine. The only way to fix the problem is to replace the starter. Hope this helps.

SOURCE: car will not start

Recheck the battery, the starter doesn't care if your battery gives 12 volts, it needs CCA (Cold Cranking Amps),  Autozone will test this for free where I live, most likely where you live too.

SOURCE: grinding

It could be the flywheel, but try putting different size shims in between the starter and engine. The starter might be a little to tight against the flywheel. You should be able to get the starter shims at any auto parts store, or ask where you can get some.

SOURCE: starter wont stop spinning

The starter relay may be sticking on start. Get someone to start truck and when problem starts hit relay lightly wih hammer. A cheap voltmeter will tell you if relay is sticking or still energised from ingnition switch after key release from start position.

SOURCE: won't start, starter will spin but will not engage fly wheel to crank up engine

Sounds like the starter drive is shot, best thing to do is replace starter with new or rebuild.

My old starter on a 1999 ford ranger would spin but not engage the engine to start it. Bought a new starter an it does the same thing. What should i check next?

Starter soups but doesn't engage. Clicking sound: you hear it spinning with a click sound before it starts spinning. No grinding sound. The mechanism to engage the fly wheel could be faulty, probably it is seized, or battery doesn't have enough power to make the solenoid fully pull mechanism (check battery amps charge if low. You may need to look at the starter as someone turns the motor over and make sure it's engaging all the way to fly wheel.
Sometimes you may need to Shem or file down where the two bolts go into the starter too get it far enough into the starter casing to get it to engage.

93 F350 7.3 diesel new batterys, cables, selinoid, switch on steering colum starter spins but will not engauge

Bendix is not engaging off the starter . To test your starter ...while someone turns the ignition to start..have someone tap on the starter very lightly with a small hamer. If the benkix is stiking it will release and give you an idea that you need a new starter

When trying to start my car its making a shinning noise and wont crank what could it be?

I assume you are referring to spinning sound, which is starter motor, and not knowing what model vehicle you are talking about, all I can do is give general idea what is wrong. 99% of the time it is your bendix drive on starter motor which is a solenoid activated gear which engages your starter motor with fly wheel gear. It is a pretty easy fix depending on car, sometimes it is the connection on starter, so check connection for corrosion, try tugging on it. Good luck.

My stater is free, spinning thn grindingmon the stop but it doesnt do it all the ti,me but is slowly getting worste its a 2001 z3 roadster 3.0im i replaced the crank positioning sensor but did nothing...

replace the starter and the flywheel-the bad starter has not engaged the teeth on the flywheel fully and has ground some teeth off so you'll fit that space every once in a while-cheers Denny

Where is the starting motor in Nissan xterra2000?

the starter on most vehicles is bolted to the bell housing of the gearbox, thats the bit that covers the fly wheel, when the starter spins it shoots out and turns the fly wheel , (cranking the engine)
start by finding the bell housing, also the starter has a direct feed from your battery try following the cables back , remember to disconnect the terminals first , dont want any electric shocks !! hope this helps

Car starts but sometimes makes a whirling noise. I was told it was the starter

sounds like the starter is not disengaging the fly wheel quickly like it should when you turn the key the starter cog connects upto a fly wheel that has teeth all around it when the teeth of starter cog connect between teen on wheel it spins it to crank your car then goes back to starter if you hold your key on after starting the noise you hear is the starter cog(teeth ) still engaged in wheel if this is the sound it needs to be serviced not neccassarily replaced

Starter

if its not turning the engine over then it's probably the solenoid stopped working , u will still hear the starter turning but it wont engage the fly wheel and will not start the car

1970 ford f100 390cu. The started motor gets locked up about one a week. I pull the starter motor and test it by hot wiring it directly to the battery and it works for about a week until it gets lockup...

You may need to shim the starter and I would have the starter tested. It is not uncommon to purchase a faulty elecrical part of any type from a part store.
