The car started fine an hour and a half before this. Now when I go to get in it, all the lights come on like normal (dome, floorboard etc...) However, when I put the key in and turn it to on, some small light at the bottom right of the dashboard lights flickers, but none of the other lights come on, and the gauges do not move. When I try to start it, it cranks, but will not turn over. I've checked the fuse, by replacing it with one I know works, but no change. I've been reading as much as I can, and someone said that it might be the ignition switch itself, which might make sense, but I'm confused as to what part that might be. Is it simply the cylinder that the key is inserted into? Or is it something deeper than that, which I might not be able to do myself? Any help is greatly appreciated.
If it cranks then it is turning over but I think you are saying it will not fire up. Either way Remove battery terminals and clean both posts and terminals with sandpaper until you see shiny
metal. The black coating is lead sulphate which has a high resistance to current flow both into and out of the battery. Have a load test done on the battery to check for failed cell.

I would check the fuel pump turn key on do not start or turn engine over just until dash lights up and you should hear a grunt sound come from back seat area if you do not hear this grunt your fuel pump is not working. Also if you have a check engine light on you should have your can scaned with a OBD 2 scan tool to retreve and faults the cars computer might be undrer going.

There should be no hidden fuse or relay for the standard wiring. If you wire the ignition system directly the battery you should get the starter going. It may be the contacts on the ignition switch itself or the ignition switch. The contacts may just not touch each other correctly.

I have the same problem with my 2000 Malibu. All the dash lights will flash for a while and when I park the car, it will not restart. However, I have to disagree with all the solutions I have read regarding ignition and other things. I say this because if I disconnect the battery for approximately 15 minutes, allowing the computer to reset, it will start every time. I want to know what is causing this malfunction, is it the computer or what?
