1997 jaguar xj6 wont shift properly

When I put the car indrive it will engage in first gear and after that it will change cycle thru the gears properly causing the tachometer to almost redline and then teh speed decreases. I recently changed the spark plugs and added 2 quarts oil. This is the first time it has happened.

SOURCE: 2001 jaguar s-type 4.0 oil in spark plug area

Hi bravo956
i also have the same problem regarding the oil leak. this is due to the spark plug gasket leaking and you will need to replace them. they are circular gaskets about 1.5 inches across that fit to the underside of the rocker covers and prevent oil from seeping down the long spark plug hole. when i investigated my leak i assumed it was just the rocker cover gasket that was leaking but once everything was removed it is obvious.

Hi

It normally should, and only changes when you operate the air recycle air option, on the dash A/C control button.

SOURCE: jaguar s-type gearbox fault when on motorway

Check under the driver side fuse box which below left of the steering wheel if there is any dampness then it s screwing the ecu, this could be due to a seal leak in the window or holes near the axle.ALso the transmission needs fluid to be change as most jag trans fluid need replacing before 75k, clearing the codes will clear the engine light which also improve the cars shifting.

I have a 94 Jaguar xj6. the transmission light is on. it shifts hard in maybe 1st and 2nd gear. I've changed the transmission ecu, transmission relay, and fuses that have to do with the gearbox.

Change the xmission fluid and filter. If that doesnt fix it, it could be the solenids, the soleniod pack, what evey they call it on a Jag.

My 94 XJ6 shifts hard only in range of shifting from 30mph to 32mph. that one gear is slaming when it changes to that gear. Sometimes it shifts smooth and other times it slams. Do i need a rebuild? good...

Hi, if you have the ZF unit fitted there are no "easy" fixes. The shifts are ECU controlled and to be honest, it would be to your advantage to have a shop that is rated for working on that model of Jaguar hook it up to a computer and run a print out. The problem might just be a recalcitrant solenoid in the transmission, or a fault in the shift controller.
There is nothing inexpensive when a Jaguar has to be worked on. On the brighter side, you can shop around for a warranted re-built / manufactured trans for the car if it is deemed to be in need of replacement. Look up the club Jaguar World and do a little research, you might be pleasantly surprised.

Good luck.

I just had my starter replaced on my 85 Jaguar XJ6 and sometimes when i go to start it, it makes that sound like when you turn the key and the car is already started and sometimes the starter wont engage...

either the starter is not engaging all the way or there is a bad spot on the ring gear, remove the starter and turn the engine and check the ring gear if its good then look at the starter

Transmission went out

This is internal gear separation. this can happen when the transmission is either old or, hasn't been serviced in a while. the gear ratio can become unstable during long term driving and, if not serviced properly, it will fail. this type of high efficiency trany can be quite fragile considering the age of this motor vehicle. i suspect many seal issues as well. i would rebuild as soon as possible.
