It seems that the battery is incapable of holding a charge. You might try disconnecting the battery cables and try charging the battery again over night. Reconnect and see if anything works - if nothing works - it's time for a new battery.

On my 94 Sovereign there is a switch inside the centre console that will switch off the alarm, not sure about the 96. You could try locking all the doors. connect the jump leads and then unlock the doors (the bonnet switch for the alarm I think is the same one for the under bonnet light so you might have to tape it down whilst the bonnet is open, just to confuse the alarm )

Good luck

i presume this is a x300 series, you should hear a click from the gear selector area when you press the brake pedal with the ignition on, if not the park release soleniod is not working, the common cause of this is the brake pedal switch faulty, you can manualy release it by removing the little star shaped plug near the gear lever and inserting a small object like a screwdriver or your key, then select N and start engine,

Check the crankshaft position sensor, it's on a small bracket on the front of the Aj6 engine, you may have disturbed it or your new balancer may be a different diameter and the gap between the pulley and the sensor is incorrect or the 1996 sensor may have a different position to the 2000. This sensor controls the ignition timing.

could be frozen if it has rained or snowed. you can try to open it by pulling on it a little harder, but you may risk damaging the weatherstripping of the car or the latch handle or latch. Pour some warm water down around the door, avoid the windows, might thaw them out.
