1996 Altima cranks, won't start

The last time my 4cyl '96 Altima started, it ran rough for about 3 seconds, then died. After that, it cranks strong, but will not start.

What I know:
- Year-old spark plugs and wires are firing.
- Fuel is flowing through new fuel filter.
- Fuel pressure is good: pump charges to 42psi when key is 'ON'.
- Air intake tube is taking in air.
- Fuel pressure regulator is not spewing gas out the vacuum port (common fail condition, I'm told).
- Noid lights show that fuel injector harnesses are all energizing.
- Exhaust is smoggy-black (like unburnt gas, I'd guess).

I have tried spraying 'quick start fluid' into both the air intake and also directly into two cylinders, just to see if it would temporarily fire up (indicating a lack of fuel). No go.

The noid lights seemed to show that all fuel injectors are energizing at the same time. I would expect any injector to energize only on its cylinder's intake stroke. However, I vaguely recall hearing that injectors actually energize on several strokes...?

Q1: Any ideas what's up?
Q2: If the fuel line has 42psi (Nissan's spec, I think), does that indicate the fuel pressure regulator is working (and not just dumping all the fuel back in the tank)?
Q3: Are the injectors firing correctly?

Thanks!

First, never use starting fluid on a gasoline engine. Check for dirty air filter, then check for Mass air flow sensor (Fault code) . This sensor controls fuel mapping, bad signal here will cause over fueling (black smoke) also called loading up (rich). Stopped up Air filter will affect Mass air flow. Perform OBD II test to prevent buying unneeded parts. Also delete stored codes.

Should be some specks on ohms you can perform without having the motor running. I just did one on a Nissia Maxima. Had the same prob...Check it with a ohm meter !!

Exact same problem that I had on mine. The typical resistor trick was useless. Here is the only thing that saved it from the junkyard: http://newrockies.ca/vatsbypass

SOURCE: Hi Car wont start .Spark

Sounds like it could be. (without checking to see if you have a "pulse" at the injectors) You can usully hear a difference in the way it turns over with a cam belt issue.

Broken timing belt damage engine 93

You mean it will crank but not start ? Do you have normal compression, spark and fuel pressure ?
If the timing belt broke you won't have compression on all cylinders.

Want crank after it has ran for awhile then it will crank after it has cooled down

Hello and welcome to FixYa!

Most of this problem is caused by a worn out ignition coil. If they heat up the car won't start and will surely will start once it's cooled down. I strongly suggest that you have it checked and replaced if necessary.
Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

96 nissan 200sx started and ran rough for 10 sec then died and wont restart. distributor is turning. no fault codes. has good fuel pressure. spark looked weak so i changed cap and rotor. still wont start....

something to ponder over here as iam not sure what could be the problem here but if its a weak spark then it could be module /coil/crank sensor in that order .These problems will not show up as fault codes i dont think as they are working but not to full efficiency

P0355 is a code I am getting on my 96 pontiac grand am. the car starts sometimes and not others. and when it does sstart it is very rough. the engine was just replaced. could the crankshaft position...

the crank sensor will cause intermitent dieing while driving and a no start,,,common gm issue,a p0355 is for the crsankshaft position sensor performance,,or lack there of performance really, lol replace the crank sensor,,it will not cause a rough running though it will either run or not with a bad sensor, you might have 2 issues but i know the p0355 is a bad crank sensor

Rough idle, dies when trying to give it gas

it'll either be your ignition system (spark plugs, distributor cap, etc) or more likely your fuel system (most likely your fuel pump or your fuel filter)

My 96' Jeep Cherokee will not turn over or start

ASE Mechanic here. check all the fuses to start, and check voltage on battery. if there was a battery draw all night the vehicle might have started but the alternator could not charge the battery because its power was too low and causing the ignition to die and then not allowing the vehicle to start. keep me posted!!!!!!!!!!!
