My boyfriend's 1997 nissan altima
you have to get the sensor replaced on the transmission. It should not cost much. the sensor itself goes for $50+ depending on the condition and such.

Be aware that this vehicle has a low oil sensor. Below 1 quart low will disable ignition(NO SPARK) Check oil often. Perform an OBDII scan with a print out. The print out will be your guide to parts replacement. If you get it to run, the cheapest approach is to Replace Air filter. Also the Fuel filter and install a can of B&G44K fuel additive to the fuel. It will condition the fuel pump and injectors. The B&G is only available at dealerships(11.00 a can at Toyota).Do not substitute, it is the best on the market. Do these 3 things every 30,000 mile for continued performance. Due to the age (1999) I would recommend changing the timing belt and water pump as it runs off of the belt and you are already in there. I don't think it has timing chains. Do not throw the distributor away, its probably OK.
1996 Altima cranks, won't start
First, never use starting fluid on a gasoline engine. Check for dirty air filter, then check for Mass air flow sensor (Fault code) . This sensor controls fuel mapping, bad signal here will cause over fueling (black smoke) also called loading up (rich). Stopped up Air filter will affect Mass air flow. Perform OBD II test to prevent buying unneeded parts. Also delete stored codes.
Ac clutch problem
Nissan came out with a Technical service bulletin on problem evaporators which caused the freon to flow from the expansion valve to the low side hose without going through the heat exchanger portion of the evaporator core it self. It can be spotted by the low side pipe from the compressor which may develop a "frost" on it. What occurs, is that the low side freezes up and has to thaw out before it will cool again.
NTB97-007a was the service bulletin.

Heading: A/C poor performance, suction side shows low or vacuum.
I feel pretty sure this is your problem. It can be verified with a set of manifold guages. The low side after it has been charged, should never drop into a vacuum and rarely drop below 20 psi. no matter how long you run the system.
The only way the problem can be solved is replace the evaporator.

You need to test whether you have power to your switch. If you do, you can test if the switch is working by checking to see if you have voltage coming out of switch to motor. If you have voltage coming out of the switch, your motor is most likely bad. If there is no voltage coming out of switch, the switch itself may be bad.
