I have a 2002 Ford Taures and the gas gage goes on empty intermittantly. Then the check engine light goes on. I have flex fuel and don't know how to trouble shoot the problem I can restart the car and most of the time the gauge goes to it normal position This is an intermittant problem

    I have a 2001 Taurus The fuel gauge is erratic. I replaced the fuel tank module (fuel pump and fuel gauge sender) and also the fuel gauge and circuit board ( under fuel gauge). I still have the same problem. Can you help? Thanks! Rob

I know that if the gas cap is loose then the check engine light will come on. as far as the fuel gauge going up and down the "float" you have in your tank could be getting stuck. This is a pain in the rear to change because you will have to drop the fuel tank and either replace the part connected (best bet) to it or make sure the passage is clear.

drive the truck or van to advance auto parts store near you and have them check the OBD II code sensor to see if you get any codes at all. Usually your check engine light should come on by your dash but if you have a short too that this might not come on. Also usually have autozone or advance auto parts check your altinator and battery out first when you are there. I think that the wires might be shorting out things by your engine that is causing this problem.

Gas gage went to empty and low gas light went on and low tire light
Put gas in your car and check your tire pressures. If your fuel gauge just "Jumped" suddenly to empty, you probably have a bad sending unit in the fuel tank.

Check the fuel regulator at the end of the fuel rail. If if is not functioning properly it can cause the the problem that you are describing. Unfortunately other than doing an R&R with a known good regulator I do not know of a fool-proof test for this component.

Low Fuel Panel Indicator On
I know if your gas cap is leaking the low fuel light will come on but I never heard of the gas guage showing empty unless you have a float problem. The float is in the tank.
