Changed water pump and thermostat, now heater blows hot for awhile, then blows cool. Think its airlocked but can't see how to bleed system.

Take the top off the filler cap run engine to boil. keep it full off water to the top. you will see air bubbles coming out as the engine gets hotter. squeeze the pipes on the rads to help the air come out. when fan kicks in turn engine off and leave to cool down.while you are doing this make sure the fan for heater is off but is on full heat. can have fan on number one on speed that is fine.

SOURCE: 1996 1.8 ADR Engine Audi A6 overheating

Hi there, this could be a faulty thermostat but typically, these issues are caused by air locks in the heating system when the car cooling system is drained to take the head off.

The water pump may be working which is fine but there may be some big air bubbles in the pipes that carry the water from the engine to the heater matrix.

Have you tried without starting the car, taking off the water filler cap, not the coolant refill cap but the radiatpr cap. Not sure if this cap is actually on the radiator on the Audi or if there is one locatd closer to the thermostate housing, but once the cap is off top up the water to just below the neck and then squeeze the water hoses around the radiator to try and push water into the cooling system. You need to to squeeze quickly and with both hands to try and force water around the system and then slowly let the hose expand in your hands. Watch for bubbles coming out of the filler so that you can top up the water level again as it goes down. There will be a lot of bubbles if its really air locked and you may have to spend some time doing this. Keep toping up the water level though and once you can't seem to get any more bubbles out. Then if you can close the system again - i.e. put the radiator cap on and go for a ride. if possible find a steep incline where you can point the car up a steep incline and get the engine really reving to push the water round the system.

Go home - wait for the engine to cool and if the heater has not started to work on that trip, once the engine is cool, repeat the process with the hose squeezing to see if you can get more bubbles out, followed by toping up and so on.

If that really makes no improvement the worrys would be that your right that the thermostat could be bad although you should notice that with the temperature gauge moving up pretty rapidly and the car getting over hot if the thermostat is stuck shut. If its stuck open then it wouldn't stop the heater working it would just be slow to warm up.

It could also be the heater valve on the hot/cold switch where teh valve is not opening, and a last ditch issue would be that the water pump is not working.

My advise would be try and clear the air lock first. Also if you have a manual for the car (haynes manual), they normally talk to the correct way to refill the heating system to prevent the air locks. Some times there are venting points on the block that can be unscrewed to bleed the air out but for that you need the manual.

I hope that will at least help some - best wishes.

SOURCE: we have an audi a4 2.6cc , the heater only blows

sounds like the thermostat is not functioning correctly? either that or not in at all? thus making the water which would normally warm up quickly, warm up extremely slowly and on really cold days not at all? with a 2.6 engine your car shoudl warm up in record time?

SOURCE: looking for procedure to properly bleed an audi A4

You didn't say what year the car is or what other diagnostics you've done lately...My guess is the radiator core is plugged...If you want to tackle it yourself, buy a Chiltons repair manual at AutoZone or NAPA stores ($25). I suspect you'll have to order the manual.
Good Luck

My 2001 a6 2.7l twin turbo is overheating even try to run heater but now blows cold air only. What could it be, thermostat, or clogged radiator, or water pump? Please let me know what you think!!!

The thermostat would not stop the heaters from getting hot . Is flush out the heater matrix make sure water flows nice and free . But I would be looking at the water pump and at the same time flush main radiator and heater matrix at the same time. The thermostat stuck shut will cause it to overheat but not stop the heat out of the blowers.

2000 ford taurus wagon 3ltr engine . heater blows hot then goes cool changed thermostat flushed complete cooling system changed water pump stays warm after about 1/2 hour of driving

Assuming the heater controls are ok there is a few possibilities.

The engine is being overcooled,
There is insufficient flow through the heater/the heater is partially blocked.
There is a permanent airlock in the heater/a failing head gasket is leaking an abnormal amount of combustion gas into the cooling system that is lodging in the heater and displacing coolant.

A partially blocked heater matrix is not unusual and is marked by seeming to have a good flow of hot coolant through it.

Normal flushing often doesn't shift the sort of sediment buildup that is common in a heater and high pressure air/water is often the only method that succeeds but it is a messy wet process that is very kill-or-cure - it is likely to destroy a weak heater matrix. The only alternative is to remove the heater matrix, dismantle it and rod the tubes through or simply replace it.

98 ford ranger no heat have changed thermostat water pump heater control valve

Maybe the heater core is plugged or you haven't bled it properly?
If the heater hose returning from the core to the water pump is NOT hot, while the hose going to the heater core from the thermostat area IS hot, then the heater core is plugged probably.
You need to remove the heater hose while cool, from the thermostat area and remove the hose from the water pump area (that's the outlet of the flow thru heater core) AND THEN take a garden hose with p-is-tol grip type sprayer, and blow water back thru the outlet hose out the inlet hose. This will blow any bad plugging material out the way it got in.
Don't apply too much pressure if it is plugged bad. The heater core isn't made to stand 50lbs. water pressure. don-ohio (:^)

Dan how do I bleed 2004 Kia coolant car temp is good but sometime at idle heater starts to blow cool hit throttle gets great heat

I agree with your logic. Attached vid addresses bleeding. Sounds like at low rpms, not enough flow to transfer the heat. So bubble or maybe a partially obstructed core. There are a couple of vids on clearing a core... GOod luck, let us know if you figure it out.

No heat in a 2007 Altima blows only when you are on the gas

Your present thermostat seems to be stuck in the open position and not allowing coolant to warm to temperature. I think you should have your thermostat changed. This will give you heat. GOO LUCK FRIEND.

98 grand cherokee little heat.heater hoses hot top rad warm bottom is cold collant barely luke warm

While it doesn't seem likely, if you've changed, or had the thermostat changed.... I'd say you got a faulty thermostat. I am curious as to what your temperature gauge says the temperature of the engine and coolant is.. If your gauge is showing hot, I can think of two more possibilities... the water pump isn't pumping right... and, if the water pump isn't working right, the problem can be a cracked head or block, which can cause an airlock in the coolant system. Check the coolant or radiator cap.

Our Durango is a loaded towing, 360 with heavy duty water cooling system. The radiator was replace before we bought it. We have put all new hoses, thermostat (2) new water pump, new cap(2) had it cle

When you fill the radiator, did you make sure the car heater was set to Full Hot? If not, there could be an airlock in the water system. This can give the symptoms you describe.

My 98 Venture's heater only blows hot air at highway speeds. Replaced theremostat didn't fix problem

It sounds like it is low on coolant. Maybe try taking a heater hose off to let air out as you add coolant. This is just a guess, not a surefire remedy. I know dodge trucks have to be blead to let the air out of the cooling system, haven't heard of it on your vehicle. But heck, it cost's nothing to try it. If it doesn't, you may need to replace the water pump. It may be wore out and only pumping enough water when the engine is revved up. That is most likely it.

Drained radiator added prestone Radiator flush refilled and started overheating, drained radiator replaced thermostat and now I get no heat from heater,Radiator water is hot

disconnect the heat hoses going into fire wall , put hose into one with pressure and flush as it sounds like it could be bloked in the heater core, the other thing that could be the problem be the hot ,cold switch as it restricts the flow to makes the heater hoter or colder , it might need tlc or replacing as it is manaul not elec

The hot water does not circulate thru the heater core.

Yes, the water should be coming thru the hoses. Only 2 things cause water to circulate. They are the water pump (naturally) and the thermostat. If both are good or have been changed, the only thing I can think of is an air pocket in the cooling system. Would need to touch some things before I could tell you more. Good luck.
