Brake pedal can't be pushed down when abs comes on, 2002 silverado

At a slow speed when braking softly the abs pump starts and the brake pedal hardens and no braking front or back, release the pedal and the braking will work until next time. the only code that has ever come up is C0265 and there is no warning lights on the dash, that code was stored in history.

SOURCE: brake and ABS warning lights on, trac off on.

You may have a bad abs controller. You need to get the code for the abs light from a shop or auto parts store.

SOURCE: brakes grindind at low speed

Sounds like your getting abs activation when its not needed. Most likley one of the wheel speed sensors has failed. You do need to have a scan tool to read the live data from the abs module as the problem is occurring to pinpoint which sensor is faulty. The abs light will not come on because the abs module thinks its just working normally. I'm an ASE certified mechanic and have seen this problem many times on various vehicles. You might have to pay somebody to diagnose it, but replacing the sensor it a very easy task. I hope this helps.

SOURCE: 1999 Chevy Tahoe- Soft Brake Pedal

Try having the dealer flush and bleed your system. It is very hard to bleed ABS systems yourself and have safe brakes that still work afterward. Bleeding non-ABS brakes yourself is easy not the same for ABS brakes. Valving, sensors and what-not require a tech and the correct equipment in my opinion. You do it wrong and you could ruin your ABS system. Do that and see if they firm up. I replaced my brake shoes/pads at the same time all new everything in back, drums/springs everything and new rotors up front. then I had the chevy dealer flush, refill and bleed system. Stiffer pedal and brakes work better. Keep in mind the brakes on 99 Tahoes are inaedequate, require new rotors often, heat up and fade/glaze pads regularly. I replace my pads long before they wear down because they glaze up and start fading early. I'll rough em up once maybe, next time, new ones. Every two brake jobs, new rotors for me. Just how it is. They will stiffen a bit and work better but they will never be awesome brakes. Just how it is on 99 and earlier Tahoes. Hope it helps. Very important to bleed correctly though. I'll bleed my 83 Toyota 4x4 myself but not the Tahoe.

Why do ABS brakes grab and push air?

hey check ur abs wheel speed sensors. check data when ur moving lf rf and rears should be reading same speed. its probably gonna be a bad wheel bearing cause that where ur speed sensors are built in to. u need a abs scan tool to monitor ur wheel speed parameters in order to pin point ur bad sensor. or pull codes from ur abs module and see what side it says is failing. good luck

Truck doesnt want to stop when I have the steering whell canked all the way?

there must be a vacuum leak in your brake master. try pumping the brake pedal several times every time you make a full turn of steering wheel. if this fixes your braking problem, then replace CHECK VALVE hose in your brake master.

My abs light comes on occasionally. everything seems fine, then some times I can't stop as well as I should. It seems that the abs is kicking in & it makes ticking noises in brake pedal area. It also...

There's a service bulliten about that problem with rust build-up on the front hubs pushing the sensors out of posistion [ most common on the pickups in areas that use road salt ], it happens mostly at very low speed. The best way to find out the problem is to have the system scanned.

I have 2002 silverado, the brake pedal pulsates and pushes back as the vehicle is slowing to a stop.I replaced the pads and rotors and the p loblem still exists. I now believe this isABS related.

Hello. What you are experiencing with the pulsating brakes and the brake pedal pushing back is the antilock brake system [ABS] working correctly. Joe

Thanks for choosing Fixya!

Just replaced pads and rotors all four on a 2002 1500hd. now when braking at slow speeds the brakes go into abs mode and start pumping. Why?

There is a tech service bulletin on this problem. The front ABS sensors that bolt into the hub assembly builds up corrosion and rust under the tab that holds in the sensor. So what is recommended is take the bolt out of the sensor flag hold down wiggle the sensor loose and pull out, then clean the hub housing .There is to much air gap between the sensor end and the tone ring for the abs.I hope this helps P.S you did nothing wrong.

Are there any malfunction lights coming on? If so then it could be a wheel speed sensor. sometimes people confuse rotor vibration with abs pulsation.

Brake pedal a.b.s pulsation at slow speeds on dry road.It wont do it all the time. It is on a 2000 chevy silverado 1500 4x4. I can hear the abs kick in when this happens.

You may see the abs light come on in your dash. I would plug a OBD II reader in and retrieve the codes.
I would say you either have a sensor that has gone bad or possibly a wire is shorting.
You can see the wheel sensor if you turn your wheels, and look down by the wheel hub bearing.
You can here the abs go whrrrrrrrr, when you step on the brake, and your braking flucuating.
Please let me know what you find.

Anti-Locks Growling

There was a recall on the ABS system on your truck. The problem was the ABS sensor on the front wheels were getting dirty and corroded causing a faults signal to the ABS module. The fix was to inspect the ABS sensor and clean them with brake parts cleaner and re-gap the sensor to the speed ring on the hub. The ABS sensor and speed ring is on the inside of the front wheel hub, spry brake parts cleaner and re-gap the sensor to the speed ring with paper folded 5 times. I feeler gauge will work but put a paper between the sensor and gauge cause the sensor is magnetic and the gauge will stick. Look for damages to the lead wire to the abs, but i think that's all fine since you did not mentioned any abs light on. You may be even lucky with just a good spray of the brake parts cleaner. Good luck and keep me posted.

Bleed right rear, left rear, right front, left front in that order to be sure of good bleed but the brake booster makes it easy to push pedal. Make sure of no leaks from master cylinder. Otherwise brake hoses being soft will also hurt baking quickly.
