Hi you may have two problems.the banging noise can be either struts/shocks or ball joints.as for stiff steering can be either power steering. or ball joints.bad ball joints can make a banging moise and make it stiff when turnning the wheels.

Thumping/Banging noise at the front end.

check front-end out, immediately, could be a bad bushing/ control arm, this would need attention, asap, you could lose control of vehicle, or somethingelse is broken, shock, but the control arm / bushing is my bet. get it repaired, unsafe condition !!!

I have a jeep grand cherokee and the power steering keeps going stiff is it the power steering pump or steering box

If it only goes stiff part of the time, the box is probably OK.

Before considering major surgery:
  • check the power steering fluid level.
  • condition of the fluid
  • condition and tension on the belts
  • check for low or uneven tire pressure
  • check steering linkages for damage (did someone borrow the car recently?)
If none of these check out, then consider replacing the pump.
