I have a 2003 Chevy Tahoe. I was driving down the street and my Tahoe started sputtering and then died like it ran out of gas. I believe it may be the fuel pump, but do not want to randomely start replacing expensive and hard to get to parts before properly diagnosing the problem (like a vacuume leak). I would like to discount vaccum leaks, but this would be difficult if the truck will not stay running. Is there a good sequence of troubleshooting for this type of problem?
I would first try to replace the fuel filter.usually there filter accumalates debris in the gas tank especially if you you ru the tank close to empty.filter location needs to be traced from the tank toward the motor.you will see a cylinder inline with a strap.part usually runs around 20.00. also when you initally turn the key before start you will hear a hum for about 2 sec. this is the fuel pump pushing the fuel up to motor.so if you hear this pump is working.
I'm looking in a hanes book that I have and did not see a fuel filter. But, did see there is a screen under the pressure regulator. Is this screen the filter or should there be another?
rthers another, usuall mid way up the vehicle against the frame rail.

Before spending several hundres on a fuel pump, I recommend doing a fuel pressure test. You can get a test gauge pretty cheap at a parts store. If the pump is junk, you raise the truck, lower the fuel tank, unplug the electronics from the pump at the top of the tank, then with a hammer and flat head scrwedrive, gently tap the lock ring in a counter clockwise direction until it pops off. Pull the pump assembly out and install the new one. Reverse directions to install.

85 with TBI only needs 13lbs of fuel pressure. verify that the fuel filter is clean. there is no easy way to ck fuel pressure, special adapters are needed, I dont have info here at home but there should be a relay for the pump, on the firewall and the oil pressure switch also powers the pump. did you replace the pump trying to fix this problem or did you just mention it to help troubleshoot the problem? verify that the fuel pump wiring has a good ground, should have been a eyelet that bolted to the frame..when you initially turn the key on, you should hera the fuel pump power up for 2 seconds, then go off, after the engine starts, the power for the pump goes through the oil pressure switch.
