Adding oil i just inherited a 1992 Dodge B250 van. It was checked out by a mechanic before i got it, but i have noticed that the engine seems to make a light ticking sound. is that normal?
so the lifters on the engine are wearing... is there something i can do to correct, or at least protect it from further wear/tear? the engine actually has less than 100k miles on it, will i be looking at costly repairs soon? I thought about using an engine treatment, are they any good?

Check applicable trouble codes? Maybe there is air in the cooling system? If your mil works, you can get some codes, that way. Cycle the key, on--off, on--off, on, then the mil starts flashing, you count the flashes to get the codes. Your looking for two digit codes. Double check your work.
fuses blow because of excessive current flow from a dead short to earth. You haven't stated which fuse blows and what the items are covered by that fuse. so check the power wire from that fuse and trace it until you find a burnt area or a place where the power wire is touching the body before it gets to something it is running
ask a local mechanic to have a look for you ,couldnt tell you without head under bonnet and good play around as and when this fault appears ,check the electrical switch on the back of the ignition lock first
is it a gas engine or a diesel? it could mean two different things depending on the fuel type. black smoke in a diesel is either an air of a fuel problem. in a gas truck there should never be black smoke. it may be a dark blue smoke which is burning oil.

it is not worth trying to fix -- just buy a new gauge and install it.
