2003 Mazda Tribute Battery light comes on but battery tested normal.

I was told that the battery is overcharged. The battery and alternator tested good.

Even though the altenator tests good, it could still either over or undercharge. The TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) specifies replacing the alternator and re-flashing the PCM.(Powertrain Control Mudule).

When that light comes on, it is indicating charging system problem which could mean alternator not charging for one reason or another like loose belt, faulty alternator, or yes, bad battery or connection at battery, for example. First & easiest thing to do is check all your connections to battery, which you've probably done, and make sure they're tight & clean. Make sure belt driving alternator is good & tight, and in good shape. Now boost the vehicle to get it going & test voltage at battery, after you take cables off. My guess is in your case, the voltage will begin to go down, indicating a bad alternator, that will need to be replaced.

SOURCE: battery light flashes

Sounds like part of a wiring harness is shorting to ground or breaking a ground connection. Check engine to frame ground straps and engine compartment wiring. Look for loose or broken leads esp. alternator and battery wires. Perhaps the power lead to the computer is faulty causing the truck to misfire. Any engine codes?

SOURCE: Battery dosn't charge, alternator/voltage adapter test's good.

Did you test the Alternator on or off the truck? It might be a problem with the control system to the Alternator. The regulator need a battery feed to work, It is usually ran through an alternator fuse.

14 amps under load isnt enough, plus the brushes in the alternator may be getting short, thats why the light is sometimes on. Ideally the alternator should be checked while the light is on.

a battery waring ligth is not telling you that the battery is defective, it is telling u that the battery is not being charged by the alternator, have the battery and alternator tested to determine th4e cause, a failing battery many times can damage the alternator as it causes it to overheat, so if the alternator is in need of replacing then it is very important that the battery be fully charged and tedsted prior to installing a new alternator if indeed that is the final diagnosis.

Battery dying

It is the alternator then. Dont take it to the dealer though because im sure they are charging you a pretty penny just to tell you there is nothing wrong. With a car this new I would not think this but there may be a short somewhere that is draining the battery but HIGHLY doubt it. Take the alternator out and take it to Schucks and have them test it.
