There are two primary symptoms of a faulty thermostat (assuming you mean the coolant thermostat in the engine not the A/C Heater Thermostat).  The thermostat can fail in basically two ways:
1)  Stuck open - Engine runs colder, heater takes forever to heat up. 2)  Stuck closed - Engine runs very hot, then will suddenly drop in temperature, then run very hot again.  Or engine overheats constantly.  When the engine is hot, feel the upper radiator hose.  If it is not hot, you can bet the thermostat is stuck closed.  If it is hot, the thermostat may not be stuck close, but not opening at the proper temperature.
Stuck open is annoying, but not dangerous.  Stuck close is dangerous and can cause overheating-related damage to your engine.
If you are handy, you can replace it yourself.  Otherwise it is an easy job for a mechanic.

My Dodge 2005 Ram overheats on hot days while running the AC. If I turn the heater on then it cools down. I need to know if this is a thermostat problem or if something else.

I see your post was a while ago. I hope this helps you or anyone ells having Dodge over heating issues.

I have a 2002 Dodge Ram 1500 and a 2005 Dodge Grand Caravan. I also owned a 2001 Dodge Grand Caravan. ALL of them had thermostat issues. When you replace the thermostat make certain you get the proper heat rating. If it is rated tool low, then the check engine light will trigger the code that the engine is not heating up fast enough. I also recommend going with a 'fail-safe' thermostat. These thermostats fail OPEN rather than closed. My 2002 RAM factory thermostat failed closed, built up pressure, then blew half the water out from under the radiator cap. This happened in less than 35k miles. The dealer replaced it. After a couple of years it failed again. Make sure you have 50/50 mix of anti freeze to water. This raises the boiling point of the water, makes it more efficient for cooling the engine, treats the water so it does not corrode and scale up the cooling system and helps keep the liquid from boiling off there by reducing the volume of fluid in the cooling system. Also, BOTH my 02 RAM and 05 caravan developed a leak in their radiators. They were slow leaks and I did not notice it until I did some standard checks and found the coolant was low, Most shops can run a pressure test for less than $40 to let you know if your radiator is leaking.

You should also make sure that your AC cooling fans is running. There are fuses and solenoids in the fuse box that can sometimes go out. When you AC is on this fans will turn on. If not, it could create a lot of extra heat.

I smell gasoline in the passenger compartment of my 2005 dodge caravan se when the air conditioning is on and i am using outside air.

I just had a fuel leak on my 2005 Caravan with the same symptom. Better take it in and have it checked. The brackets that hold the lines wore out and caused damaged to the fuel pump which I had replaced.

Heater in 2005 Caravan takes forever to heat and comes and goes

First thing to check is if the radiator and overflow tank are properly filled with antifreeze (with engine cool, of course) Next, is the temperature gauge moving up properly? If not, you probably need to replace the thermostat.

I have a 2005 dodge grand caravan. My heater doesn't work (freezing air)it's over heating when I tack it up (going up a hill) and now it knocks when I push the gas and just cuts off. I let it cool down for...

You may have a stuck closed thermostat which get's worse when the car overheats. All the symptoms you describe indicate this.
Buy a new thermostat and replace the old one. Do not continue to drive the car for any distance other than a distance that prevents the knocking.

Locate the thermostat by following the top radiator hose to were it attaches to the block. The stat is located under the flanged piece that the hose is connected to.

I have 1997 dodge caravan. I think I need to replace the thermostat. Where is it located?

It is located at the end of the large top hose where it connects to the engine.
There are two bolts holding the thermostat housing.

Drain radiator enough so that there is no spill at that level.
Remove the housing, Remove thermostat and scrape off the old gasket and gasket sealant from the housing and engine manifold.

Replace thermostat (pointy side UP) and apply sealant to both sides of the gasket. (I prefer Permatex #2 - non-hardening sealant)

Hope this helps!
