This usually doesn't work the way you think it does. The factory radio are controlled and monitored by the Body Control Module. Things like warning chimes and the clicker for the turn signals are supplied by the BCM and factory amplifier and played via the radio. You are likely to get strange issues. You can try an integration harness for fun.

check fuses to radio.
check connector at radio.
if all that is good, radio is bad.

it should be written cast on radio for wire purpose
orange wire is there for ignition current turn on and off radio current
red for battery current (keep radio setting,clock)

older radios had a bulb you could replace, pre-1990

however, now the displays are true LCD and the radio will need replacing

Buy adapter harness from stereo shop simplifies problem and keeps factory harne in tack.

I suspect you have the radio problem that needs to be reapired by a guy who does this.

Question: The display on my radio has gone blank. Everything else on th radio seems to work.

Answer: It seems that in most cases the problem is bad solder joint for the flourescent display. Here is Chris's comments on this problem:
"On the factory stereos from Ford they used two types of displays. One is a LCD display with a light bulb behind to illuminate the segments of the display. Replacement of this bulb can be tricky but not impossible.

On the stereos with the blue/green Vacuum Florescent Displays (VFD) the problem is usually caused by broken solder connections to the display board or the Tube. On most VFD’s the last two pins on each end are the filament and if the solder connection breaks it will not let the tube light the segments. Most VFD’s will out last the life of the car but they do burnout.
