Hi markjones, the ignition switch can usually be removed without too much disassembly. First you will need to remove a plastic screw in the upper and lower trim covers. Seperate the covers. You should see a black plastic ring around the mechanical switch. gentley remove the ring. Next remove the rubber o-ring/band. With the key in the iginition and turned to almost to position 1, insert a heavy duty paper clip, or bmw special tool (about $30 from the dealer) into the small hole in the switch. There is a cam in the hole that needs to be twisted clockwise so the cylinder can be removed. When installing a new switch make sure to remove the little tab pice of metal that usually breaks off in the housing. Also be sure to make sure and reinstall the rubber ring/band because they are part of the ews system. If you key turns continuously, or is not able to be removed, the ignition housing and cylinder both will need replaced. Replacing the lock housing is about a 2 hour sequence and can be challenging. I would recommend a shop for that kind of repair.

Bmw 316i 1998 ignition wont turn

Not familiar with the 316i but have had 97 M3 which exhibited similar trait. If the car is manual transmission try to gently pull the steering wheel to each direction while trying the key. If the vehicle is an automatic make sure the shift lever is all the way into the park position. In both cases it could be the safety interlock is causing the problem.
Depending on the mileage of the car - and for a 98 at an average yearly rate of 12K per year - I'm guessing the miles are up there, the ignition switch iteself could need replacing. If you have a good shop manual (Bentley) and posses mechanical abilities it is not too difficult.

Bmw 361i what year model?

Not entirely sure what you're trying to ask, so I'll take a shot in the dark. maybe you're asking - "what model years was the BMW 316i produced?"

If so, it was produced 1990-1993 (with a 99hp engine) and from
1994-1998 (with a 101hp engine). More here:

Drivers window on e30 bmw 316i touring goes down but not up.can i put the window up manually?

Not without disassembling the door. If you are handy you can take apart the window switch and clean it. If not try spraying compressed air into the switch. The switch is likely dirty.

For BMW 316i 1994 - 1998 you will find the starter motor on the right part of the car at the bottom back right side of the engine, between clutch case (or automatic gearbox case) and cylinder block.

Key is broken in 316i touring lux 1993 ignition how do we get the barrel out and do we need a replacement steering column also

alot of times a broken key may be removed by a torch tip cleaning file. this can be had at most hardware stores. its rectangular and when opened has a lot of little round files in it. find the file that will fit in to the key slot snugly and push it in then slowly pull it out. this may take some expermintation with sizes and techniche but i have removed a lot of key stubs this way.
