Thanks to all of you for your helpful insight..Drove van yesterday, died in drive again.Started engine, waited 5 minutes, put in reverse van died in reverse.Called aatco, same shop rebuilt dads transmission. After i told him all my vans symptoms he told me he would do a complete transmission check on diagnostic computor free.He did say from what i described it sounds like the torque converot.Am printing all possible solutions given to me on FixYa,can have more to work with if its not the torque convertor.Thank So Much! the torque convertor has lock-up and should not be locking up in reverse. The transmission is very oil-hungry during a reverse shift so the pressure is jacked up I would start first by checking the trans fluid and make sure the filter screen is not pluged

Usually the problem is due to a dirty throttle body or a faulty idle air control valve. Stalling in reverse and not in drive is unusual.

Am told my van does not have throddle body or idle control sensor, equipped with electronic fuel injection.

All injected engine have a throttle body, it takes the place of the carb. And it has an idle air control valve which controls idle speed by regulating how much air enters the intake. Ford calls it an idle air bypass valve.

Try changing the throttle body position sensor, or the ideling screw. , Service the fuel injection system (injectors and filter) have the gas tank washed as there could be rust paricles in it. and if that fails you will need to have an engine job done. Chances are the pistons are worn out or the rings are bad.

Other possible causes are the torque converter or the transmission itself, However if it coccurs with the ac, it means that it happens when extra stress is on the engine. This is caused by eighter the fuel system or the engine itself.

SOURCE: My 1996 Ford Econoline van manual gear shift goes

More than likely the shift indicator is broken. It has a small retainer that is held to the steering column that breaks and throws the indicator out of alignment. In some instances (rare) the tube and guide that are on the top of the steering column break or become loose.

SOURCE: Car stalls and idles rough

On thing to check is the air duct hose that connects from the throttle body to the air cleaner housing. If it gets cracked it will cause stalling problems and very rough idle.

My 1994 ford econoline van is not shifting gears

Hello.
This a repair for a transmission shop. Sounds like the pumps are bad inside the transmission. Thats the worst option I have.
It also can be a poor shift linkage adjustment. And the last solution can be the speed module that tell the transmission when to shift.
Goodluck! I hope this helps!
