HARD SHIFT 2006 Chevy 2500HD diesel. My transmission started heating up while pulling my trailer up a grade. It caused the engine temp to rise and the thermal fan to run mostly nonstop,which kept engine temp down while trans temp continued to rise. I had to pull over and stop when trans temp reached 250 degrees and allow the trans to cool. I thought the problem was only while pulling, but while driving up to Big Bear, going less than 40 mph,in 71 degree temp, trans temp went up to 230 degrees. The truck has 83,000 mileson it and I've done maint. on trans including second fluid change just prior to this trip.

Do yourself a favor & get it scanned at transmission shop, or dealer & fixed as needed,(within reason) . Delaying it could cost lots of money. A rebuilt is about $1500-$2000.

SOURCE: 2001 chevy monte carlo is overheating when driving

Hi;
If your engine cools down when moving fast, you either have a problem with your water pump or your electric fans that cool off your radiator and a/c condenser. This is controlled by a temperature switch, but these fans should kick on instantly when A/C is selected.

Transmission getting hot

If it's truly getting hot, then you have an issue with the cooler. Most circulate fluid through a coil inside one of the radiator tanks to cool the fluid. Some utilize an external cooler, usually mounted in front of the radiator. If you pull heavy loads, such as trailering, then you really need to install an external cooler. High temp oxidizes the fluid. For every 10deg rise in temp above 170deg the life of the transmission is cut in half. An external cooler isn't too expensive and can save you tons of $$$ in the long run.

My 2001 chevy diesel truck is very hard to start below 35 degrees

check the glow plugs usually nd external check would indicate power to the plug but in your case i would suggest you to pull atleast a couple of plugs and makes sure that they are getting hot you will find that the plugs are not working replace the glow plugs and the engine will have no problem in starting adn if you live in a cold region make sure that our electric corde is plugged in all night since the diesels need to be warm to operate necause they strictly work on heat from the engine and they do not have spark plugs to ignite the fuel.
