Car won't start then exhaust fumes smell like varnish

Several times recently the car won't start after sitting idle for 30-90 minutes. After letting it sit for a few minutes after the first try, it has started, then exhaust fumes smell like varnish when it does start.

Thanks. That was my suspicion since this has only started with this tank of gas.

sounds like you may have a fuel delivery problem,There is a fuel regulator that keeps a steady pressure this may have the same tendencies as a fuel pump cavatating also,Have a good garage do a fuel flow test as well as a fuel pump pressure test.

SOURCE: jeep cranks but will not start.

sounds like you are experiencing electrical problems which have to do with your computer in your car and its ability to send signals all through out the engine. you have a loose connection in one of your wires somewhere possibly in the wiring harness. check that.

SOURCE: 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited Not Starting Intermittently

Check the battery. If it starts to fail it will start doing any conceivable thing including failing to start the car. Have the battery checked with a load tester. A simple voltmeter will not give an account of the requirements needed and the ability of the battery to meet those requirements.

SOURCE: 1991 Jeep Fuel Control Issue

Hey Mudkicker,

Who ever thought of putting an electric fuel pump inside a tank of gas........

Check your other gauges for accuracy. They do that when a ground is loose.

Check the wiring from the fuel tank along the longitudinal frame for frays and shorts. Plugs are secured.

Under the hood, passenger side, check the fuel pump relay. Switch it with one of the others to test it.

Bring the vehicle to an auto parts store. Ask them to break out he code reader. Check for diag codes

Exhaust fumes

Look for a bad gasket where the pipe connects to the manifold. Could just be loose bolts or a bad gasket.

2002 Malibu stalls while driving, doesn't over heat. But can start smelling gas fumes before it stalls. usually wait about 5 mins then restarts. in higher elevation runs fine but in lower elevatio

It sounds like the catalytic converter could possibly be almost completely plugged up not allowing the exhaust to leave the engine like it should. It just builds up in the cylinder head and when it gets too much in it built up and there's no where to go, it'll stall the engine. By letting it sit for a few minutes, it gives the exhaust time to find a way out and the car will restart.

1995 Tercel won't idle runs like **** and getting gas in the oil. Computer scan just says cylinder misfire #1,2,3 & 4

Probably a stuck injector. It could be the engine computer is getting a bad signal from the MAP sensor, too. Run a diagnostic test to verify.

Fumes inside 1998 subaru forester

I had a 2000 with leaking fuel lines. There are a few molded rubber lines. Check the condition of the rubber and the hose clamps. If they are wet, you have a leak. When replacing use the good clamps that you can tighten with a nut driver

Engine Smoke from exhaust with foul smell

four cylinder?

It is not uncommon for these engines to start to "burn" oil. Check the oil level and confirm that it is low. If it is make sure to top it off and monitor the level.

Next time you change oil try using a oil designed for high mileage vehicles. We have been using Mobil High Mileage at the shop with pretty good results on higher mileage engines with oil consumption issues. We have have several of the same vehicles as your use the product and it has helped them as well. It can't hurt to give it a shot.

When I start my car, there is a very strong smell of exhaust fumes or maybe even gasoline in the car. It seems to lessen over time or maybe my sense of smell just adjusts to the smell. Any help with what...

the vehicle may need a service to ensure all fuel is being burned on ignition.
the exhaust may be broken under the car and exhaust fumes are being released.

I hope this was useful.

I have a 2000 volvo S70 i smell fumes in side car when driving went to get exhaust checked no problem there what can the problem be?

What type of fumes are they exhaust or oil burning.
Exhaust ..Idle engine and put glove on hand put hand over the tail pipe and if engine stops in 20 seconds then the exhaust is good if it keeps running then its the exhaust is your problem..
2 if ex ok then its due to the breather pipe on the engine and it should go back into the inlet manifold to be reburnt but if its not fitted or rubber hose split or broken then thats what you can smell.
So check out under the bonnet and see if you can smell or see any smokey fumes or sucking noise.
Can you see smoke when you start engine.
Let me know ASAP Ron
