SOURCE: i can't take off or put on a new serpentine belt on 91 yj

you need to loosen the alternator bolts then turn the bolt under the alternator to relieve tension on the belt

SOURCE: can't release tension on serpentine belt

You might find tension is adjusted at your power steering pump for that engine & belt.

Can not get the serpentine belt loose or off my 98 jeep wrangler???
Look for the belt tensioner. On some models, all that is required is to use a socket and ratchet to lift the tensioner. SInce your vehicle is a 98 model, the tensioner should be an automatic type that just lifts up. If that is the case, then lift up the tensioner to remove and to replace the belt.

There should be a picture of it under your hood, or on your radiator support. If not, it will tell you in your owners manual. If you dont have that, keep googling, you will find it.

I can't get the serpentine belt on my 2002 Jeep Wrangler
Before installing the new belt, rotate the tensioner pulley until it's in it's "free arm" position. This will enable you to get the belt routed around the other pulleys saving the tensioner pulley for last. Once on, rotate the belt until the tensioner pulley takes up slack. It should lock into place once the engine is started. Best of luck and please post back either with any questions or to rate this solution. Thank you.

How to replace a serpentine belt on 1998 jeep wrangler
Should be the pulley underneath the power steering pulley. Loosen the nut, then back the bolt down the loosen the belt, tighten the bolt to tighten belt.

Belt replacements
Hi Saul,

I've got an '86 Cherokee Laredo 2.6L and a '91 Wrangler too. It's got a 4.0L inline six cylinder. But it has a serpentine belt.

Comment me back and tell me which components will be attached to the belt in question. That way I can tell you which of them gets used to install the belt.

You will need a socket set and a pry bar for the procedure.
