1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee Logo

1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0 L starts and shuts back down in 3-5 seconds. Changed Crank position Sensor. Jeep started, ran for 10-20 minutes idling and then shut down. Tried to restart and it turns over, starts and runs for 3-5 seconds and shuts down. Same as before. Crankshat Position Sensor reads infinite ohms across leads b and c. Does this sound like possible capacitor failures in the PCM?

Ill not guess, (too much pit time)
94' , 4L engine.
the ASD relay is first.
ever consider that?
it drops for up to 8 reasons, and the scan tool tells you every time that happens and why.!
see why here and stop guessing, CKP is just one of 8 reasons.
if the ASD does not drop at sta,ll then that is a whole other matter.
ask (stalls have vast reasons, if not ASD drop)

what matters most is ASD, ASD !
my innova 3140 (does 94s, like most DIY tools can't)
will show the errors. (the flashcode trick can do so too)
cKP is. code "11" DTC.
http://www.fixkick.com/Jeeps/ASD.html

sure bad wiring, it like saying in the rain we get wet
EFI is all about good wiring and that includes GROUNDs
sure my 88 and 96 jeep both failed the engine side ground
only tight hard left turns up hill, and both had a bad factory ground lug on right side of engine, and was a bad crimp in the factory.
(i bought them both new)
but this is antictotal, and i hate that and guessing,
why not do the tests, and let the chips fall were they may.

in one case the ckp died. (no ground)
in all cases the scan tool showed me the reasons.
here are some examples.
1: scan tool died, cant communicate found no power to PCM.
in once case a loose fuse or one cracked inside, did this.
2: scan tool reboots as PCM reboots, oops lost power again to pcm. (power or ground, takes 2, to tango)
3: see sensors go dead?
4: see coil ignitor fail.
5: see IMMO go active on the fly?
6: see tacho line go dead.
see pump drive go dead, (dtc for that too)
and more. it the not scanning it for these critical errors is the cause.
we have logging voltmeter, that allows us to monitor power to all things in the EFI system to catch random drop outs.

PS ever done the flash deal.
this is in the FSM book 1994
it's no secret

https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=kuHEzOQGtOs

posted this like 100 times now.
nobody wants to learn or use scan tools my guess....

ps2:
watch out for the dirty flash test.
it has the nasty habit (fact) of clearing key spark failures
at key off.
oops.. you just cleared the error , turned off key.
dang.
that is why scan tools exist , ! so you dont miss stuff.!!!!

yes, bad wires happen as do 100s of other things, ill not guess or give my 100 antidote answers. why do that (it's endless that) yes, i too have 1000 answers guessing (held)

DOES THE ASD drop or not? yes/no.?
    before the stall.(or during it)
if the answer is yes, then the scan tool answers your questions , that is which of the 8 ways that cause this.
lets be clear, PCM caused stalls. !!
    the DTCs tell you which,
guessing the 8 ways will be hard, or impossible. if you ignore this check.

mORE, ways, (over 50 there are)

if the scan tool fails to show a code?DTC
the means, engine shut down for other reasons the BRAIN (PCM) could not detect.!!!
    EG: not ASD caused !

1: bad spark is one thing, ever do a full tune up ever>?????? might this be the time?

2: low fuel pressure, no the PCM cant detect that or the rusty wires to it.
nor the bad FPR, nor anything wrecking regulation here.....

3: or insane high fuel pressure flooding engine and stalling it.(fpr stuck closed ask for tests, its in the book , if you need facts like that)

we learn all these facts or better EVIDENCE by tests and simple inspections.

i see engine stall , scans show 0 (live scanned not useless trips to autozoned)

i Pull the spark plugs. omg its soaking in fuel , omg2, all 6 are or just one,?
all 6 i check fuel pressure. or unplugged ECT?(scan it for 180F first?)

or just one? do leak down test on THAT injector.? (one cylinder foods.so...)

see? INSPECTIONS and test find problems.
    and never guessing.
unless you have the luck of the Irish...
    few do....

    ok now more.
i use my scan tool and do live scanning
and see the MAP reads ALL wrong.
or any of the other sensors.
    all this is evidence.
not looking, is the cause for going broke guessing. (seen here vast)

ops the scan tool shows the PCM is not in closed loop status hot.... oops'
we fix that first. (gross misfire top cause)

Check for cracked or frayed wire on the tdc sensor it or the sensor wire harness may be compromised it then stretches once it gets hot causing an open which means engine turns off. happened to me on 1993 cherokee no one found this problem but me and my genius friend. I would drive and like that bang it would die.

The typical resistance of CKP sensors is in the range of 200__2000 ohms if your sensor read infinite you need remplace.

  • Anonymous Aug 31, 2012

Adan, The info I have for testing the Crankshaft Position Sensor in a 1994 Jeep 4.0 L says the ohm meter should show infinite or open across terminals B and C of the CPS. This is a brand new sensor from Advanced Auto. Maybe it is no good or the testing info I have is incorrect

Check to see if the fuel pump is running after it shuts down...could be a relay or the pump itself (overheating internally) Checked the fuel filter yet? Some crank sensors need to be shimmed. If it's too close to the flywheel even though you recently changed it, if it's too close to the wheel it can fail again. May not be the case but worth checking over. Also check the ceramic resistor on the left fender near the master cylinder if you have one. That too can cause problems.

What is causing my 1996 jeep grand Cherokee to start then shut off after rough idle?

NO ENGINE STATED, NO TRANSMISSION STATED,
STRIKE 2, NO DTC STATED, STRIKE 3...... SORRY, BUT ????
the 1 bolt sensor , must be calibrated, removing the sensor wrecked the calibration, and the sensor then gets smashed,
(1 of the 4 kinds do that)

what code,??? I cant help you lacking that. nobody can.
DTC errors what are the or what where they, forgot them?

the new sensor, from the dealer has the calibration pad on it.
after market not, and is sold separate none jeep, causes that new sensor to smash into the fly flex plate, and wreck it. (CKP wrecked)
here is the offical jeep pages, on that.

SEE CKP FROM H3LL HERE.

http://jeepdied.com/Misfire101.html#ckp4

SEE THOSE 4 ENGINE, AND TRANS MIXES??????

FIGURE 7 IS THE SELF DESTRUCTING SENSOR.
if this is yours, and now the end of it is wrecked
get new one, and use a .030" inch think spacers,
and glue it on the end. it will wipe off on first start and bam, its now perfect.

if no DTCs .using a real scan tool? or the mostly lame key on/off/on 3 times trick.
this key jive way is weak, as it will not see many errors.!!!
the key on way, can also miss , CKP and CMP errors
when you key off and engine, the key off can reset some very important errors, like P034xx p035x or any P03xx errors.
why not tell your DTCS, ????
above is on USA cars, not outside.....

Install a new crank shaft sensor. I had the same problem with my wife's Jeep. It would run fine fore days at a time then quit. When the crank sensor goes out their is no spark or injection of fuel into the engine. This is a Hall Sensor. They can be intermittent, and affected bu heat. If your Jeep will not start, try freeing the sensor and see if it starts. Cold Freeze is used in electronics to test

1995 jeep grand cheerokee laredo 6 cyl. randomly dies then takes anywhere from five minutes to hours to restart

The only component I know of, that shuts a Jeep off while idling or driving 40mph down the road, is a bad crank sensor. Usually when it starts going bad, it will sporadically shut off, like yours does. Eventually, it will just die and the Jeep will not start at all. Have it tested and replaced, if necessary.

No spark can be caused by a bad crank position sensor, or a bad pick-up coil inside the distributor, especially if you can't find a signal to the coil with key on. You could also test the coil, or try a known good one. There is a test procedure for the crank position sensor, but you'd have to locate a repair manual for it. I think it's just running a resistance test across two terminals of the sensor harness connector with an ohmmeter. My son's Jeep had a bad pick-up coil that shut it down, and no spark.
Once you get it running, and if still hard starting, check the fuel pressure.
