I had some split vacum hoses on my bmw 318i after a couple of days of replacing them a high pitched screech started to develop. i checked the drive belts and pulleys but all seemed fine. i tried to take the oil filler cap off while engine was running but it was **** fast, after alot of effort it came off and the screeching stopped indicating a high vacum build up in the engine. has anybody got an idea how to cure this? thanx
SOURCE: Idles too fast. Back pressure in case. How do I fix this?
Clean out the blockage in the engine gas recirculation and or idle by pass.Sounds like a blockage or the idle bypass has failed

If you wish to go high-tech, you may look into an automotive stethoscope. On the other hand, a standard cardboard tube will work great for this. What you will be doing is looking for bearing noises. There are a few places under the hood I can think of that could be having issues. Listen to the fan belts, any pulley bearings, the water pump, the alternator, the very front of the engine, the very back of the engine, and all along the transmission, the power steering (Both pump and receiver), and the brake pedal booster. May also check the starter, the wiper motor, etc. After doing that, you may wish to take a flashlight, and look up under your dash. I've found the cardboard tube extremely effective in diagnosing strange whinings.
