SOURCE: factory 99 dodge trailer plug wiring

You'll need to disconnect the wires from either the truck connector or the trailer connector...
I highly suggest purchasing a voltage checker- it looks like a screwdriver with a pigtail of wire with an alligator clip on the end. The tip of the 'screwdriver' has a point for probing. The light in the probe will light up...makes it easy to trouble shoot without a helper behind the trailer.
Hook the aligator clip to a good positive grounding point on the bumper or frame(not painted).
then pin by pin on the truck connection, stick the probe on each terminal tab.. and write a simple diagram where you find brake, tail, backup, etc...
Then i'd suggest, taking the connector off of your trailer, exposing the wire ends.
Run again thru your diagram and turn on each light of the truck. As you do, touch the wires from the trailer to that specific terminal. (make sure your ground wire is attached on the trailer) you can mark each wire with a piece of tape and label it which is which.
then simply attach your trailer wires according to your diagram to the terminals in the connector... that should get you in business..
hope that makes sense...
That way if the factory wiring harness remains the same, you'll be able to use it with other trailers if the need arises..

SOURCE: Trailer wiring problem. Tow vehicle is a 2008

Most likely the brown wire from the trailer connector is connected to a constant battery voltage source, and it should be connected to the vehicle running light circuit, however someone might have wired the trailer connector up that way on purpose so that the trailer does not draw power from the vehicle running lights and possibly damage the vehicle running light circuit. (Dodge/Chrysler vehicles do have delicate lighting systems) Here are some images to help assist you, and the 4 way connector is the same as the 5 way connector just without the blue wire for the trailer brakes.

Can you charge the caravan battery while towing the caravan?

If you are talking about a Dodge Caravan, the answer is: It depends on what you are trying to charge and how are you planning to charge it.
If you are trying to charge the battery, it then depends on the charger. If you want to charge the battery with the alternator by running the engine, then you can do so by running the motor whilst you are towing it.
(I did so with a 1985 Buick when I towed it from central Florida to central Ohio with the motor running.)
Be advised:
Unless you plan to disconnect the drive shafts, any vehicle with an automatic transmission should not be towed unless the motor is running.
If you are planning to use a plug-in-the-wall charger, you may need a loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooomg extension cord.
God bless your efforts.

We want to tow a trailer behind 1996 dodge caravan is there a place to plug in an extension?

Auto parts stores sell a plug that plugs in behind your tail lights then i ran it ito the back of my van and plug trailer lights into it. It was a lot cheaper than paying someone to wire a mount onto my van. You will have a wire in the back of your van always but compared to the price to have one mounted its worth it. I have had it for three years and wire hold up to rear door shutting on it repaetidly.

Electrical towing wiring problem on Grand Caravan 2006

Well the BEST way to fix that is take the Van AND Trailer to the dealer and make them check it over and get it working. Sounds like they screwed up., and are trying to blame the trailer. The 4 pins are easy to check Running lights, Left turn, Right turn and Ground. I suspect the 7 pin is wired wrong. I dont know why they put a 7 pin wiring plug on? Those are used for largeer trailers that need a battery feed and electric brakes

You will need a turn and brake signal box IF, you have different bulbs for brake and turn lamps. If the brake and turn bulbs are one(red)lens than no box will be required. Thanks, Dana

No power to tail light on trailer- 2004 Dodge durango factory tow

If this is a factory light harness for the trailer hookup on your Caravan. Look under the hood for a fuse box. Many 2000+ vehicles have this with separate fuses just for the trailer lights.
