1999 Land Rover Discovery Logo
Rick Hatton Posted on May 18, 2012

I recently purchased a 1999 Land Rover Discovery I for my wife. It seems to run fine until it has been operated for awhile, maybe 30 or 45 minutes and has warmed up good. When shut off to go into a store or something, it is difficult to re-start and spits and sputters momentarily. Seems to be a fuel delivery problem. Once re-started and driven for a few blocks, it is fine again until shut off. I have changed the fuel filter, spark plugs and wires, checked vacuum lines to best of my ability. Once it is running it is fine. It is only when it has been operated and engine is warm and then shut off that it has this problem. Any ideas/suggestions?

Sounds like the fuel filter is dirty and needing to be changed. It's cheap and easy to swap out.

Observe the engine running in the dark to see if there are any spark jumps from the wires or coil, you may have a carbon track.....

If you're standing looking at the rear of the vehicle, it's on the chassis rail on the right hand side rear wheel arch.

The ignition system is controlled by the ECM. Check power at fuse box in on right side under dash. Check fuses right side engine compartmentlower dash panel if all OK check power to ECM located right side "A" pillar in alloy box. this unit could be faulty if no spark at coils, assuming they have been connected correctly. may have to get tested for codes at L/R dealer or someone with test tool. Another source of problem may well be flat battery in transponder key. The indicator light on the dash willflash rapidly for 10 seconds if the vehicle has been unlocked with the remote and the drivers door is opened if the battery in remote is getting low

I'm pretty sure that sounds like a thermostat problem. If you live in a hot climate expecially. Sister's Range Rover having the same problem in Florida.
