It doesn't die until I stop the car for a little while. The engine light and gas cap light stay on. The last time I turned on my air on the highway, it started cutting out and finally died. After sitting a long while it started again. My "old time" mechanic thought it was the fuel filter at first. He changed it and it kept doing it. After it died on the highway, he changed the fuel pump. That didn't work either. If I just drive it around town it's fine. If I drive it on the highway 40 miles it's fine, but after a couple stops after a long drive, it will die at every stop light.

This exact same thing happened to me....it ended up being the Mass Airflow Sensor. Replaced that and it has not happened since.

It's got all the symptoms of a leak in the fuel line. You may want to start backward at the tank and work your way all the way to the carb to find it but it would be surprising if it was something else. All the best.

sounds like a fuel delivery issue, does it throw a check engine warning?

I guess I should add that the time it started cutting out and stopped on the highway (till it sat a long time) I had just turned on the air conditioning. Not sure if that has much to do with it or not. Again, it was after a long drive. I went back to my mechanic to see if he would refund me any money for being wrong AGAIN and he wouldn't but he did try to check the idle air control motor. He said he sprayed around it. (?) the under dash computer said it was an evaporation system gross leak and something about the fuel cap. Thanks
