Did you remove the belt spocket ? If not , then it should be timed by the basic procedure. # 1 Piston at top. The camshaft pully marking at TDC. take off # 1 sparkplug and mark the distributor( if it has one,) to the numer one wire where the spark plug wire connects and mark the distributor cap where the # 1 wire is. remove the cap, and turn the rotor pointing to the mark that you made. reinstall the cap and the sparkplug. and it should be timed. if the sproket was removed then it could have been placed out od alignment with the built in marks.

Need to set timing from scratch on 1993 Mercury Tracer 1.9L

On the pulley, they are marks that line up with a mark on the head. That is TDC for the cam. Then set the crank to 0 on the timing marks. Put the belt back on.

Put on a new timing belt now it wont start

I need some clarification. Did you replace the belt because it broke? If so you may need to replace the head. The problem is if the belt breaks when your moving it usually damages the head and thus needs to be replaced.

Xh falcon timing problem. Ive just dropped the original motor back in and i set all the timing marks but it wont start. I pulled the dizzy cap off and it is out half a revolution so i set it again on tdc...

pull the distributor
turn the crank to tdc compression stroke ( remove n1 plug and put you finger over the hole to get compression stroke ) line the rotor button up with no 1 plug lead
move the rotor button back about 1/2 inch and insert the distributor
as you push it in the button will move around to line up
keep adjusting the button back until it lines up
tighten the distributor down

Resetting timing after replacing head gasket

Do you have the timing belt on and the tensioner set correct? If so, just rotate the crankshaft around until the notch on the crank sprocket is lined up with the pointer on the oil puimp housing (TDC). Now the camshaft sprocket's notch or pointer should be at the top and exactly in line with the mark on the rear timing belt cover. If it's not correct, you'll have to release tension on the belt, remove it, and set the camshaft to the mark. But before you do that, turn the crankshaft back (counterclockwise) just three notches. Then you can turn the cam to line up, then return crank to line up, and continue with belt installation, setting the tension, and re-checking timing marks after rotating the crankshaft a couple of revolutions. Once you know the timing is set to TDC, no further timing adjustments are possible, because the computer controls timing. I don't know how important it is, but just to let you know: Chrysler recommends after belt removal or replacement that one perform the "crankshaft and camshaft relearn alignment procedure" using the DRB scan tool (Chrysler's scanner device) or equivalent scan tool.
And the firing order on all four cylinder engines is the same: 1 3 4 2.

How do i set the valve timing if i cant see the timing marks on a VW 1.8 20valve golf cylinder head timing chain , i can only find the one on the belt side i have put the cam on TDC for the ex-valve but...

The 2 cams are linked with a chain at the rear of the cylinder head.

The cams need to be set so the slots on the chain sprockets line up with the cam tower caps with 16 links between cam caps.

You cannot see the front crank pulley tdc mark so you need to lock the engine at tdc with a screwdriver jammed into the timing hole on the bell housing after setting engine at tdc or use a DTI
to check to tdc in the #1 spark plug hole.

If the cams have not been disturbed you only need to set the belt cam sprocket to the mark and crank to tdc.....all this means pulling the core support into the service position so the belt tensioner can be locked down and/or doing a complete belt job along with a coolant pump if over 70,000 miles..

When setting timing after broken timing belt, how do you know when # 1 is at TDC with both intake and exhaust valves closed? What is TDC?

TDC is an acronym for Top Dead Center. It is when the piston has reached the very top of its travel and there is nowhere for the piston to go but down. If you align the timing marks on the engine, the piston will be at TDC with the valves on #1 closed.

To position your crankshaft and cam to the correct position, it should be done BEFORE removing the belt if possible. If the belt has already been removed and/or the belt was broken, the same principles apply, but you will have to go about it completely different.

Turn the engine clockwise to align the "O" on the crankshaft pulley with the "O" on the outer timing belt cover.
Remove the plug in the outer timing belt cover and look through the hole. The timing marks on the camshaft pulley should align with the cover pointer. If they do not align, rotate the crankshaft one full revolution and align the "Os" again. They should now align. When every thing is lined up like this, your engine is timed to #1 at TDC and the valves on #1 cylinder will be closed.

Now if the belt has already been removed or if the belt was broken, You may have to temporarily put the outer cover back on. You may have to put it on and take it off several times until you get things lined up. Time the crankshaft "Os" first. It will not matter which rotation you are on if the belt is not installed. (TDC is TDC - the piston doesn't really care where the valves are - that's the camshaft's problem LOL)
After the crank shaft is lined up, turn the camshaft so the timing marks line up with the pointer. Then remove the front cover and install your belt.

After setting the timing belt tensioner, rotate the engine two full turns clockwise and recheck to make sure that all the timing marks still line up. If they do not - repeat the procedure.

I changed the water pump on a 2003 galant and now it wont start I took timing belt off did i mess up the timing

If you have already turned it over you may need to give it a compression check to make sure you did not bend your valves. Set your timing mark to top dead center and take off your upper belt cover. Check the cam mark to the timing mark (TDC) on the lower cover. That will tell you if the belt is on correctly. If the timing marks check out you may have just flooded the motor . New plugs will assist in starting the motor if they are just WET fouled.

Wont idle

put the crank at TDC and the cam gear and TDC slip the belt on adjust the tensioner and then rotate the engine two times make sure the timing marks are still lined up then put it back together and try it if you have the timing off it wont idle right and if could also be the throttle positioning sensor

I just put a timing belt on my car but now it wont star

Sounds like the timing marks were not lined up.
Be careful do not crank engine over as you will damage valves!
Remove timing belt cover again, set engine to No1 TDC.
Check that cam pulley mark lines up.
You may need a manual to help with this.
