Headlights Hi, I have a 2006 Escape, whenever i activate the fullbeam headlights the main headlights go out (this has happened from the day i bought the car), Is this something i can fix myself? or should i take it back to the dealer
This is normal as far as i am aware, i have the same problem and went to the ford dealer, they werent sure so they rang the mazda dealer (ford escape is basically a mazda tribute) i was told that this was normal.

{: ) It seems you have done your homework well. I presume you are referring about the main power source of the relay coming from the battery. And that you dont have any trouble with the relay receiving the control signal commanded by your headlamp switch.
You can try these: Turn ignition off. On your underhood fuseblock, there is a 15amp fuse labeled HDM. Pull this out and make sure its not blown. If it is, replace with same amp rating and check again operation. Otherwise proceed with the next step.
Using your test lamp, probe on the exposed conductor on the fuse for voltage. The test lamp should light up whenever you probe on either side of the fuse, otherwise your fuseblock is in question. We can rule out the main wiring issue if the fuseblock is supplying power to all other circuits on your vehicle. Ihope you get lucky.
turn the selection knob to auto and leave it there. the lights will automatically come on whenever the sensor on the dash trips. it takes a minute in a tunnel but you will never have to worry if your lights are on.
most of the time the headlight assemblys are replaced because of this at my work (toyota dealeraship ) but i would try to take apart the headlight assembly very carefully by prying up the tabs and glue that attach the front to the bach then clean out and reseal, or you could try to use a clothes hanger with a small amount of cloth or paper towel taped to the end and insert through the hole where the headlight bulb goes may take some time but could save you a considerable amount of money hope this helps
if all the fuses are good i would replave the headlight switch. good luck paul
if the car was under water very long i would look at selling it i have a customer that bought a flood damaged car and we are always fixing strange elect. problems.
