What is the mechanism that comes after the power steering pump in the belt diagram?

I replaced my power steering pump do to a whining, well I replaced it and it still whines. After further inspection, I spun the all the pulleys on the front of the engine and found that the part below the power steering pump grinds like all heck. I don't know what it is and I'd like to replace it myself. I just need to know what it's called.

I found out it my AC compressor. I am going to NAPA Auto Parts to get a different serpentine belt to reroute my belt to leave out the AC compressor. I know quite a few people that have done this and it has solved the problem until they are able to replace the compressor. I will leave another comment later today to let everyone know how that works out. I also do not recommend going through muddy water that is as high as the hood. I had to replace my alternator, starter, power steering pump, exhaust flex pipe and now the AC compressor. I saved a ton of money buying used parts and installing them myself but still it's an expense I rather would have avoided. I have noticed though that a a bad shuddering of the front end has stopped with the new power steering pump & pulley. All of this was my fault otherwise I'd still be a happy camper with my Trooper. Take care Trooper lovers!

I also removed the AC relay (engine compartment fuse box) to ensure it would not engage (or cease moving and burn the belt off). I know it's winter and that is why I don't know why it would go bad on me like this when I haven't used it in several months. It's strange though because I can hear the compressor kick on when I turn the front window defrost setting on with the heat. That is the other reason I removed the relay. If anyone else has/had this problem please let me know. Thanks!

Problem solved. 80.5 inch belt in place of the 90" effective removes the AC Compressor from the loop. The tension (I measured pounds of pressure at the pulleys) and it is the same. Not all vehicles have schematics to do this but if your vehicle was make without AC, most likely you can do this quick fix during Winter so you can wait for warmer weather to fix it. The bearings are completely shot and my engine is quieter than I can remember without the loud grinding and extremely loud whining it was making. I hope this helps any other 2002 Trooper owners. Take care!

    And I have a 2002 Isuzu Trooper 4X4, not a 2000.

same experience - I just bought a 2002 4x2 and while running solid I have an annoying whine noise too... Not a loose belt - something more distinct ... thinking either power sterring unit or AC unit - thanks for the 80.5 inch belt idea - might help me figure out what is crying... If it is the AC - any ideas on where to get one - and would the whole thing need to be replaced or just part of it?

It is a common fault with many cars / trucks, if it is grinding it is beyond lubrication. The good news is parts are available seperate for these pumps. You need a clutch pulley or just the bearing if that comes by itself. Seek part from an A/C specialist as it is normally way cheaper

Testimonial: "Thanks, the whole thing is bad. The bearings sound like I lost a few when it spins around and when the air is on, the pulley doesn't even move. Nevertheless I added to my description on how I "fixed" it. Problem solved until warmer weather comes to put in a new compressor. Thanks for the response!"

Itermittent whining noise in 2008 Ford Sport Trac

When in Park or Neutral does the noise change if you rev the engine? Whining noise generally come from a worn bearing so there will be a few things to check.
First check the serpentine belt. A loose or worn belt will cause noise. Carefully watch the belt with the engine at idle. Does it run smoothly or 'bounce' as it spins? Bouncing could suggest the spring in the belt tensioner is worn and has started to go slack.
Stand in front of the vehicle with the hood open and carefully listen to the engine. Sometimes you can hear if it is on one side of the engine or the other.
The most likely causes of the whine will be...
Power steering pump, A/C pump, Water pump, alternator pulley, belt tensioner and it's pulley or an idler pulley.
Parts like the alternator have more than one bearing in them so that could be another area to check. If the serpentine belt is off you can spin each pulley by hand. Listen and feel for a gritty growl as it spins. Bearings in good condition are usually smooth and quite.

Whining coming from front

It sounds like the power steering pump has a broken pump vane and will need to be replaced and then the system flushed to get the debris out of the system so it won't ruin the new pump.

There is a loud "whining"

Power steering pumps whine when they are low on fluid, or if they are goin bad. Serpentine belts also whine in cold weather or when they are goin bad. Tru spraying just a little WD40 on the belts when its running, if it goes away, you should be thinking about a new belt. If nothing changes, check the power steering fluid, if its full, take to a mechanic

The belt in my 01 Dodge Dakota squeals badly. Started when I had my power steering pump replaced. I tried changing the belt and the tensioner, but still squeals. Is it possible the pulley on the power...

excess mechanical drag from the pump can cause the belt to slip and squeal, but before focusing on the pump I'd check the condition, tension and alignment of the belt. I might even try cleaning all the pulleys with an aerosol brake cleaner and install a new belt, particularly if the current one has more than 50,000 miles on it. It might be that the squeal is coming from or caused by a different belt-driven accessory.
A more typical noise from a power-steering pump is a high-pitched whine, not a squeal. Usually, if the steering wheel is stationary, meaning that the steering rack is not "asking" for assistance from the high-pressure fluid from the pump, there's little or no noise

While struggling to come out of a parking space in icy conditions, the car lost power steering and the battery stopped charging.Checked uder hood and the serpentine belt had come off track. the belt and...

Remove the serpentine belt and pull on the power steering pump pulley (pull out towards the radiator). If the pulley pulls out of the pump than the shaft is broken. This is very common on GM vehicles.

The pump is very easy to replace and I can give you some further instructions if needed.

2002 kia optima,,, whining noise that stops when turning left

power steering pump probably went out.. if you can easily get at the belt and are any kind of mechanically inclined, remove the drive belt to the p/s pump and then start the car if the noise is gone then its probably part of the power steering pump

Whining when i press gas

normally, the only part of your automatic transmission that will make a whining noise is the pump. it usually whines when iether the fluid is low or more commonly when the transmission oil filter is getting plugged up.

the power steering pump will also make a whining noise too.

turn the wheel all the way to the right and hold steady pressure against the stop. this puts maximum force on the power steering pump and, if the power steering pump is the one making the whine, it will change the sound of it. (usually louder).

if the trans pump is making the whine noise, it should sound different in neutral compared to drive. this test will really only work if it make the noise without the vehicle moving. if it wont do it at idle hold the rpms at 2000 or so.

if you decide the noise is coming from the transmission, and the transmission filter has not been replaced (assuming you installed a used transmission), replace the filter by removing the oil pan.

oh and also, if it is the power steering pump you should be able to make it make the whining noise while the vehicle is stationary. if it wont make noise unless its moving its not the power steering pump.

03 Windstar makes a whining noise when idling and turning. Sounds like it is coming from steering column. Power steering fluid level is good.

When you checked the power steering fluid level were there any indications of excessive foaming? There are three things that would cause a whining noise from the power steering. 1- low fluid (you checked that so that is not the culprit), 2- loose steering drive belt (you should not be able to press down on the belt more that about one inch between the steering pump pulley and the crankshaft pulley), 3- power steering pump bearing worn out.

Whining noise in engine

Checking the level of the power steering is a good start. The pump is mechanical, driven by the serpentine belt, and cannot be turned off. Your steering may seem normal but if you let it go, low fluid can destroy the pump.

Whininhg from power steering pump

That is the power steering belt routed around pump pulley that is slipping . The power steering is located behind the steering column, replacing and re-routing the belt is not an easy repair.

If instead the whining noise comes from under the hood , that is the serpentine belt, that is easier to repair.
