My son was driving my 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.2 liter limited on the highway at 70 mph. The engine suddenly stopped running. Had it towed to his house and now it will not start or fire. It is getting gas but no ignition. He changed the plugs, rotor and distributor cap, no help. It does not fire at all. He did the key thing and got the dash board error codes of 35 and 5. He is in Florida and I am in Georgia. I tried to get a list of the error codes and what they meant on the net but no luck. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Timing chain possibly broke.
Indicates a cam belt /chain issue
may be a failed crank position sensor or wiring
do the obvious first
while cranking see if the rockers are moving

My 98 Cherokee was the exact same. I used to have to turn the key back and forth 3 times and then it would start. Otherwise it would just crank and crank for a while and then start. Pretty embarrassing! Took it to the dealer and they said that my fuel pump was losing pressure. I changed the fuel pump and I don't have to prime the pump anymore.
SOURCE: RPMs increase by 3-400 without increasing speed
Then you are facing a internal transmission failure you are basically slipping your fix is a replacement or a rebuilt

for testing, there are some u-tube videos that show each circuit being tested under load. 5v, sensor ground, and sensor signal. need a good meter to check those"hall effect switch" sensors.after trying evrything, THEN buy a pcm and get it flashed with the update. WOT during crank for tests unless u want to disable the fuel pump at the relays for the time of ckp and cam tests

It is one of 2 things, a bad coil or a bad crank sensor. The crank sensor can be checked by a scan tool that shows individual sensors data. Look at RPM on scanner and crank engine over if you see a reading than sensor is OK. If it stays flatlined than its bad. If coil is bad than replace it. The coil is most likely the issue on this engine. The other thing that will disable the ignition is if the factory alarm system has engaged. It has been known to happen. It will kill fuel pump but since you have fuel than this is unlikely. Jeep updated the coil a couple of times due to poor performance. Ive replaced hundreds of these coils on 5.2s and 4.0 engines.
