Missing out My 97 cavalier just started acting out. It is not shifting when supposed to and it is idling at 1 even when no gas is applied. The car is starting to shake quite bad also. I checked the oil and all the fliuds seem to be ok but I don't know if this is a transmission problem or what. This morning my check engine light came on as well as the light that says ets off. What does this mean?? Please help!! My 97 cavelier is doing the same thing. It is not shaling yet. But, I got up to go to school this morning and the ets off and check engine light came on. There's a sound like its grinding. I just bought the car and I have not had a tune up as of yet. Could it just need a tune up and will the car ride for another week and a half because that is when I will have the money for the tune up. PLEASE HELP!!!! Ineed my car to get to school.

Sounds like it has a vacuum leak(small hose, something simple)but to be sure stop by advance or auto zone and they will perform a free CODE CHECK,that should identify the problem quickly.as far as the transmission goes shifting is effected by engine performance so it's probably ok.be sure to watch the temperature gage and make sure it dosen't overheat, otherwise it should be ok till you can get a code check.

97 gmc acted like had bad gas but now also at idle with brake on engine will surge and engine sounds like it s missing

Hi Allen, The brake booster is connected to the intake manifold and that is where the low pressure is generated. If the diaphragm or one way valve, or connection pipe is leaking it will give the same effect as a leakage on the intake manifold. The symptoms you report are of a leakage on the intake manifold. To prove one way or another, disconnect the vacuum pipe for the booster and block the connection into the intake manifold. Be careful when testing as you will need to use excessive force on the brake pedal to stop. If the symptoms disappear fit a new booster, if not, pour water along the manifold and observe any bubbles where there may be a leakage. Let me know how you get on. Regards John

97 cavalier starts and runs ok from a cold start after a few minutes of warm up it starts to run rough and miss. If i try to drive it it will start out ok but won't shift automaticly but shifts fine m

Sounds like possibly more than on problem, crankshaft position sensor, or ignition module likely on starting prob which maybe affecting shifting due to hard code in ecm, or shift prob could be shift solenoid in valve body of transmission. Both parts readily available from local parts store

After start car do not move after gear shift

Check the automatic transmission fluid. If it smells burnt or looks any color other than redish replace the trans fluid. Most likely the fluid is low or really dirty.
