2007 gmc 4wd won't shift to 4h or 4l. Hear clunk and lights blink but won't engage

With the outside temperature below freezing, the truck will not shift into Auto 4WD, 4L or 4H. I hear a clunking noise but the 4wd does not engage. I brought the truck into the garage and warmed it up, and then everything would shift fine. Once the truck was back outside and cooled down, I had the same problem with the shifting into Auto 4WD, 4L or 4H. Any ideas as to what the problem is would be very much appreciated.

SOURCE: service 4wd message appears when shifting into 4h

could be but chevy truck have a common problem with the 4wd system
you have to replace some kind of actuator mounted in the mechanism inside the motor the one is attached to the transfer case to switch the 4wd system, you need to get the motor out and work with it in the work bench for furter information about it explain to you dealership parts guy cost around 130 bucks and if you do it your self mark the position of the sprocket or gear when you open it to avoid mistakes and have to take out again because the gear teeths have a position to make the device fit back on the transfer case

How do I turn 4wd on?

    • 1 Start your Dodge truck's engine.
    • 2 Turn the electronic transfer case from "2WD" to "4WD Lock" to engage the high range 4WD, if the dodge truck is equipped with an electronic transfer case; otherwise, shift the transfer case lever from "2H" to "4H." The electronic transfer case is located on the instrument panel and is marked with "2WD," "4WD Lock" and 4WD Low." The lever-equipped transfer case is located to the right of your leg and is marked with "2H," "4H" and "4L."
    • 3 Shift the transmission into "Neutral" while the vehicle is either stopped or rolling at 2 to 3 mph to begin engaging in the low range 4WD. Turn the electronic transfer case to "4WD Low," if the Dodge truck is equipped with an electronic transfer case; otherwise, shift the transfer case lever from "2H" or "4H" to "4L."
    Tips & Warnings
    • Indicator lights will come on and alert you that your vehicle is in either the high or low range of 4WD.
    • Do not engage in the low range of 4WD drive if the transmission is in gear; you must shift to "Neutral" first.
    • Many Dodge trucks allow you to shift from 2-wheel drive to the high range of 4WD at up to 55 mph--consult your truck's manual to ensure that this is possible. Do not exceed 55 mph while engaged in the high range of 4WD. Do not exceed 25 mph while engaged in the low range of 4WD.
    • Do not engage in 4WD unless you are on slipper or rocky roads.

Transfer Case - Mechanical Shift On The Fly (MSOF) Operation The mechanical shift on the fly (MSOF) system is a manual shift 4WD system that allows the operator to chose between two different 4x4 modes as well as 2-wheel drive. The operator can switch between 2WD and 4H mode at speeds up to 88 km/h (55 mph). To engage or disengage 4L range, the vehicle speed must be less than 5 km/h (3 mph), the brake pedal depressed, and the transmission must be in NEUTRAL.
Shifts between 2H and 4H can be made at a stop or any forward speed up to 88 km/h (55 mph). At temperatures below 0°C (32°F) shifts should not be performed above 72 km/h (45 mph).
The transfer case is equipped with an electromagnetic cluch which is located inside the case. This clutch is used to spin up the front driveline when shifting from 2WD to 4x4 mode at speed. When the manual shift lever is moved, this activates the 4WD indicator switch, 4WD electric clutch relay, and the electromagnetic clutch. When the transfer case front and rear output shafts are synchronized, the spring loaded lockup collar mechanically engages the mainshaft hub to the drive sprocket. Finally, the front axle collar is engaged and the electromagnetic clutch is deactivated.

HOW TO SHIFT TO 4 WHEEL DRIVE

Hi - Here is instruction how to do.

From N to 4H

Stop the vehicle completely, place the

transmission in "N" (Neutral) and depress

the brake pedal and the clutch pedal fully

(if equipped), then push in and turn the

switch to shift into "4H".

From 4H to 4H LOCK

You can operate the transfer switch either

when the vehicle is stopped or while the

vehicle is moving.

Position the front wheels straight ahead

and turn the switch to shift into "4H LOCK".

If the vehicle is moving, we recommend

that the speed be less than 100 km/h (60

mph) during this operation.

NOTE:

• When shifting between the transfer

switch position and the transfer gear

position is unmatched, all 4WD indicators

will blink and the buzzer will sound.

• If it is difficult to shift between "4H" and

"4H LOCK" while the vehicle is moving,

try accelerating and decelerating your

vehicle several times after turning the

transfer switch. Be sure to wait until traffic

conditions allow you to accelerate and

decelerate safety before using this procedure.

CAUTION

(Continued)

• Do not operate the vehicle while a

4WD mode indicator is blinking

except when shifting between "4H"

and "4L LOCK".

If you operate the vehicle while a

4WD mode indicator is blinking, a

buzzer will sound and the transfer

will shift to "N" (Neutral) to prevent

transfer case damage.

In this case, use the following procedure.

1) Depress the clutch pedal fully (if

equipped) or shift the automatic

transmission gearshift lever to the

"N" position.

2) Turn the transfer switch to the

position previously selected.
3) Operate the transfer switch again.

2002 4Runner - 4 wheel drive indicator won't go off

When the transfer case is not engaged for extended periods of time, the motor inside for the 4WD sticks. Try this: Raise the vehicle on a hoist, and do some tapping on the case while switching the 4WD indicator. Sometimes, this will free up the contacts inside the 4WD shift motor.

Hope this helps. Thank you for choosing FixYa for assistance.
