Starter Nothing happens when I turn the key. Where is the starter located?

  • chosenvessel Nov 07, 2008

I have the same problem, except it starts sometimes and sometimes it does not. Also whenever it does start, it kills after a few seconds. I've replaced the starter, altenator, coil packs, fuel pump, and also verified that all fuses are functional. Any suggestions?

The starter is located at the lower part of the engine, back side. trace the big wire from the positive terminal of the battery, it should run down directly to the starter. if it passes to a starter relay, then still , it will go to the starter.

SOURCE: starter motor wont turn over

Make sure car is cold. Battery must be fully charge. Make sure all battery connections and to starter and engine/body are clean and tight. Have someone cranks the car as you check for cranking power to the starter solenoid;it is the smaller wire on the solenoid which you may need to remove. Do this test at least ten times using a 12volts test light. If power on every crank, it definitely sound like starter acting up. Keep me informed.

SOURCE: turn the ignition key and nothing happens. turn it

when it won't start, use a test light on the solenoid wire (the small gauge wire) in the start position, you should have voltage. Also check your shift linkage to make sure the shift cable isn't keeping it from going into park position. try it in neutral position as well... that's a clue to a trans selector switch

Hi my car doesnt start but all ligts are on onbthe dashboard when i switch on but when i turn the key to start nothing is happening what can it be problem one guy told me is main fuse.its a polo vivo

Check to see if power is getting to the starter. Locate the starter and while someone is turning the key to start, hit it with a hammer. If it starts, replace the starter.

Ignition problem, turn key but nothing happens?

First thing to do is look at the dash lights when you put the switch in START position. If they blink or dim, you may have a faulty battery or poor connectivity.
Next try jumping the starter. You'll find a starter jumper at almost any auto parts. If you get no result then the problem is with the starter, If the starter turns then the problem is in the starting circuit from the switch to the starter relay.

I have a 95 buick-new battery-turn key & nothing happens-won't turn over&where is the starter located

The starter is where the engine joins the gearbox, usually on the engine side. Check that he wiring it connected at the starter and the ingnition switch. Make sure the battery terminals are good and clean and tight. Otherwise the starter solinoid may be faulty, or the starter itself.

I have a 2001 vw beetle that will not start the lights come on when key is turned but nothing happens to the starting section it was suggested to change the ingition control module if you think that is...

before replacing your ignition control module, it is a good idea to test if it is your starter/solenoid. I dont know if the solenoid is built into the starter on this car (many or most newer ones are) but either of a bad starter or solenoid could also cause a no start condition and is probably a more likely and simpler problem scenario. When you say "nothing happens to the starting section" do you mean you've already tested that no power goes to your starter or simply that when you turn the key to the start position nothing happens? If you have a voltage tester there should be a smaller red wire leading to the starter/solenoid in addition to the large one going straight from the battery box. If this is 'hot' or has voltage when the key is turned to start (12-14 volts is good) then the ignition module is not the problem. Remember that on your VW you can only hit the start point once for each key cycle.. ie before your 'start' point works, the key has to begin in the complete off position. you can't 'retap' start from the on or acc position for additional tests.

Starter relay clicks but starter is not turns over. Check the starter connections and starter itself.
