The neutral switch is so that you can't start your vehicle in a gear (drive, reverse, ect.) your looking to replace the backup lamp switch. Not sure where its located on your jeep but that sounds like the problem. Happy hunting!

SOURCE: shifting lever doesnt lock

Likely the shift detent mechanism is broken. It's inside the unit and can be reached by removing the trans pan. It should be just inside where the shift lever goes through the case.

It sounds like the shifter gear indicator is missaligned. When you put the transmission in reverse the shifter passes over a button/tab in the console that turns on the back up lights. If its missaligned they'll either come on before or after reverse or wont come on.Remove console, with ignition on,vehicle not running, put vehicle in reverse and align connector over button/tab so back up lights come on and tighten shifter indicator

SOURCE: my reverse lights dont come

First, use a test light to determine if you have power at the light sockets. If you do, then check the socket grounds. If ground is good but there is no power, most likely problem is the reverse switch. Location varies with transmissions. On AW4 units it should be on the passenger side of the unit, Chrysler transmissions usually at the left rear corner above the pan rail. Stick shifts, usually on the left rear of the case.

If bulbs good check fuse and then the reverse switch needs checking. This switch activates the light when reverse selected.

Reverse light not working what to do

If bulbs are good then you need to check the switch that powers them when you put the car into reverse.

FYI - Neutral safety switch prevents car from starting unless it is in neutral transmission position only.

Reverse lights stopped working on 2005 jeep grand cherokee. bulbs and fuses good. Dealership and aftermarket do not offer a neutral safety/reverse light switch. Any suggestions greatly appreciated

totally untrue but using the wrong name
ask counter man for PRNDL switch, on side of transmission A./T
and tell him which of 2 transmissions used, there,
42RE?
the only line pages at jeep cover this.(parts online) why not look?

the shifter uses a cable , this cable goes under car
this other end goes to the manual lever on side of the trans
this lever has a PRNDL switch on every a/t made (most cars)
but?
when in R, mode, the switch closes and the 12vdc leaves there
to the 2 rear backup lights, and they glow.
sure check fuses, first , for ever and ever. that.
ive posted the GC FSM links now like 100 times. so will skip that

but what trans?
45RFE box.
on some jeeps the switch (sadly) was moved to the solenoid module.
'
called soleniod packaage

http://www.factorychryslerparts.com/showAssembly.aspx?ukey_assembly=640503&ukey_product=8664680

but you need to learn what transmission is there.
42RE
45RFE
or just what first, or you will buy the wrong parts.

does this help. surely the dealer will answer you.
even look up VIN in their database and see
what trans is there, no grease on knuckels at all.
the trans does have a plate on the side that reads.
BLA BLA.. full id and serial.

Why don't my 1998 s10 backup lights work when car is in reverse, stop and tail lights work fine all bulbs and fuses seem to be good ?

if the backup bulbs are good then check the neutral switch as this is where the reverse switch is, its part of the neutral switch. it may have stopped working and need replacing. you will be replacing the neutral switch. if you have power out of the switch then check for power and ground at the light socket as there could be a bad wire or connection.

Backup lights dont work

Check the fuse and the bulbs first, if all is good then i would look at the neutral saftey switch, this is what controls the back up lights when shifter is put into reverse

I have a 1995 jeep wrangler and the reverse lights do not work

First thing I would do if you haven't already is replace the bulbs. You may want to have one bulb out and see if anything happens with a multimeter when it's in reverse. You most likely will need two people for this job. Most likely I would guess either a fuse, or your neutral safety switch is to blame. The fuse would most likely be the turn/bu fuse. The neutral safety switch is about a 20$ part and fairly easy to change.
Thanks,

Back up lights don't work and i already changed the light bulbs and the fuses are all fine

If you haven't checked for power going into the socket, or if the ground is good. I'd say you have a faulty neutral safety switch on the transmission. When you shift the gears it keeps the vehicle from starting unless it's in neutral or park. It also senses when you are in reverse and sends power to the reverse lights turning them on.

No backup lights. Bulbs are all fine, fuses also.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Additionally check the reverse switch and its wiring/connectors. The reverse switch is located at the transmission. This is also part of the neutral start switch assembly. This page would give you additional insight.

Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.

Pls be informed that due to my current rank and rating, even a Helpful wouldbe detrimental to my status. Should this solution not address yourconcern, it would be appreciated if you could just not rate it at all. Cheers.
