Diagnostic Test Code (DTC) P0101 has a generic description of "Mass or volume air flow circuit range/performance problem". This can be caused by several things including:
> Dirty air filter
> Air leak in air intake system
> Contaminated, deterriorated or damaged Mass Air Flow Sensor
> Poor electrical connections at the Engine Control Module, the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor or the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS)
> Faulty MAF or TPS
You should check your air filter and air intake system visually and correct any obvious defects/leaks first.
If a visual inspection does not turn up the cause, then you will need a scan tool capable of reading sensor data to verify the function of the MAF and TPS. You will also need proper electrical diagnostic equipment to verify the integrity of the circuits and continue with diagnosis.
I have an 04 Kia Rio and had the same code P0101. I replaced the Mass Air Flow Sensor (MAFS) and the light went off for about two days. Then I took the Throttle Body apart checked the resistances on my Intake Air Control Valve (IAC Valve) and the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) both were in nominal ranges. So I then thoroughly cleaned the carbon from the IAC and Throttle Body. The change was immediate the car was idling a lot smoother and idling high for a little while til the computer adjusted the air flow to the IAC. So, I recommend cleaning and changing the gaskets on the IAC and Throttle Body.
Thats a mass air flow range/performance issue.
If you use a K&N or other type of oiled air filter it could have fowled the Mass Air Flow metet/sensor. A simple cleaning of it if possible. Also may sure its plugged in of course.
Yes, MadMikeRS!!! There are aqctually Technical Service Bulletins Published by Kia, Hyundai, Toyota, Ford and GM that I am aware of that addresses this particular problem with aftermarket filters. I saw that SOMEBODY gave you a "thumbs down" for your answer...I gave you a "Thumbs UP" - that is what I feel your answer deserves!!!
Well thank you dttech. I also know of the TBSs'. I don't sweat the thumbs down. They are usually from people that don't know anything about automotive repairs so they rate in ignorance. I get poor ratings from people that use the wrong termonology and its my fault because I don't know what that made up part is they are asking about. I still help them as best I can anyway.
Yeah I know exactly what you mean! Just today I got a thumbs down from a guy that asked where the daytime running lamp module was located on his 2004 Chevrolet Impala. I explained to him that his Impala was not equipped with a separate daytime running lamp module and that the daytime running lamps were controlled by the body control module. He gave me a thumbs down and commented that all he wanted to know is where the RELAY was located....I'm like HUH??? If you wanted to know where the RELAY was located, why did you ask where the MODULE was??? I guess we're also supposed to be psychic?
Well at least the guy was not asking where the fuel inertia switch is.
I had a woman come to me at work and she told me she needed the inertia wheel for the seat belt retractor. I tried in a very nice way to explain to her that you can't get parts for seat belts they need to be replaced as a unit. She must know more than me because she insisted that all she needed was this inertia wheel for the seat belt and not a whole unit. I know this person and know that in her mind she thinks she is a God and the rest of us are clods. She is the type that there is no other answer but the one she wants to hear.

Well, thanks to you all for your help, my car is fixed with the MAFS problem .
I hope that if someone else is having the
Same problem hope this will help them also ... the pig tail to the MAFS was not
making good connection. so my friend that helped me he said is pretty common
the female end the clips inside get flat in off to cause the malfunction, so if someone is having the same problem should replace the mafs pigtail first, for around 10 DLLs it is worth it I learned the hard way. So good luck I hope this information help somebody else.

with the p0101 make sure you have a clean air filter. it can be bad spark plugs and or wires, or a leak in the air intake system
Probably carbon build up on a sensor. Had this happen on a Ford Expedition. I put it on the highway and hammered it several times. It blew the carbon off the sensor. Light went away.
